Fernando is a song between two men recanting their younger days fighting in the Mexican-American war. The song is unique because although Frida sings the lead, during lines with harmony, Agnetha sings the lower notes in the first half of the verse while Frida sings the upper notes. Then halfway through, without warning, Agnetha sings high harmony. The transition is glorious.

Frida was so beautiful and sultry, Agnetha was cute and childlike, and together they could produce the most fantastic harmonies possible.

Florarosa, watch his reactions to the songs with Agnetha in lead vocals, then you will see, that it's just your imagination, that he doesn't recognize her. I guess you wouldn't complain if he only talks about Agnetha there and doesn't mention Frida. Fernando is Frida in lead vocals, so it was to be expected that he speaks about her, as it is expected that he speaks about Agnetha in the songs with her in lead vocals. In his first 15 ABBA reactions, Dereck has reacted to more songs with Agnetha in lead vocals (8) than to songs with Frida in lead vocals (3), the other 4 were shared vocals, so stick to the truth.

Björn (the guitarist) was/is the lyricist of the band. He wrote the lyrics after they composed the melody, he let the music inspire him to find the right words to the song. When Frida and Agnetha were trying out their vocals in the studio, they usually were singing half finished fun lyrics. Once they found out the best way how the women would sound, Björn came up with the final lyrics.

ABBA put so much depth in the lyrics of many of their songs. Every time I hear this song, it gives me chills. I didn't know until today that it was about two young men, I thought it was a man and a woman who were the freedom fighters. The thought of two people knowing that war is bearing down on them, and how precious their hours are, is something we don't hear very often in music. I think one reason the song resonates with so many people is because they recognize the fragility of life, the meaning of being willing to sacrifice yourself for a greater cause, and how bittersweet it is to look back upon a loss, knowing you would do it again because it means that much to you.
