I did this sketch in high school with my acting partner who I went through a lot of great collaborations with. We practiced this until we got it perfect. Over and over again. We had a very old fashion drama teacher who when she gave you a compliment it was REALLY taken to heart. She told us besides Abbott and Costello, we did the best performance of it she had ever seen. I did Abbott's portion, and my friend did Costello, she did the frustrations so well that she at times seemed like she would pull her hair out.

Love it! Me and my friend did it in advanced speech i believe it was. (Or drama, it was the same teacher) it was so fun! And yes, quite the bit to learn by heart... :D
@vdicarlo

I also did it in High School. It was about 1970, and a friend of mine, who was a big fan of the routine, convinced me to do it with him in Spanish, which we were supposed to be learning at the time. It was a mess. Until you try this sort of thing, you have no idea how difficult it is to get the words, the timing, and the acting right so that it is actually funny. Since then, I have had a greater respect for people who can do it successfully. Some of them are famous, like Jack Benny and George Burns, and some only known to a lucky few. Of the latter, Tony Tamburello, who sadly died young, was a comic genius whose rendition of the pre-execution scene in the Mikado will always stand out in my mind as one of the great achievements in theatrical comedy. May he rest in peace.

The best performance they did was a live show - I think for radio - with a band behind them, similar to this one but I think years earlier. Costello was almost crying out of frustration and it was hilarious. At the end even Abbott and Costello themselves were laughing. I wish I could find that video! I saw it only once, about 50 years ago, but never forgot it. They were wearing regular street clothes, not the baseball uniforms. It was not part of a TV show or a movie. The audience was live and you could hear them reacting every step of the way.

Not so much surprised that he swore - the I Don't Give A Damn ending was regularly used when playing for the troops (as they were here) - but that for the moment he forgot they were being broadcast. He's genuinely worried that this could get them blacklisted, but pulls it all together without drawing attention to it. (A cardinal rule in performing is not to call attention to your mistakes as they are rarely noticed, but since this was not only broadcast but filmed it got preserved for posterity.)

The comedy routine and the dynamics of it are so perfect that even when updated versions of have been presented, such as rock bands instead of baseball players by the SCTV Comedy Troupe or political leaders instead of baseball players by Johnny Carson and Fred Holliday on the Tonight Show, it's still funny (as long as you have some knowledge of the rock bands and political leaders involved).

"Who's on First" (Lou Costello is considering becoming a ballplayer. Bud Abbott wants to make sure he knows what he's getting into.) Abbott: Strange as it may seem, they give ball players nowadays very peculiar names. Costello: Funny names? Abbott: Nicknames, nicknames. Now, on the St. Louis team we have Who's on first, What's on second, I Don't Know is on third-- Costello: That's what I want to find out. I want you to tell me the names of the fellows on the St. Louis team. Abbott: I'm telling you. Who's on first, What's on second, I Don't Know is on third-- Costello: You know the fellows' names? Abbott: Yes. Costello: Well, then who's playing first? Abbott: Yes. Costello: I mean the fellow's name on first base. Abbott: Who. Costello: The fellow playin' first base. Abbott: Who. Costello: The guy on first base. Abbott: Who is on first. Costello: Well, what are you askin' me for? Abbott: I'm not asking you--I'm telling you. Who is on first. Costello: I'm asking you--who's on first? Abbott: That's the man's name. Costello: That's who's name? Abbott: Yes. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ Costello: When you pay off the first baseman every month, who gets the money? Abbott: Every dollar of it. And why not, the man's entitled to it. Costello: Who is? Abbott: Yes. Costello: So who gets it? Abbott: Why shouldn't he? Sometimes his wife comes down and collects it. Costello: Who's wife? Abbott: Yes. After all, the man earns it. Costello: Who does? Abbott: Absolutely. Costello: Well, all I'm trying to find out is what's the guy's name on first base? Abbott: Oh, no, no. What is on second base. Costello: I'm not asking you who's on second. Abbott: Who's on first! ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ Costello: St. Louis has a good outfield? Abbott: Oh, absolutely. Costello: The left fielder's name? Abbott: Why. Costello: I don't know, I just thought I'd ask. Abbott: Well, I just thought I'd tell you. Costello: Then tell me who's playing left field? Abbott: Who's playing first. Costello: Stay out of the infield! The left fielder's name? Abbott: Why. Costello: Because. Abbott: Oh, he's center field. Costello: Wait a minute. You got a pitcher on this team? Abbott: Wouldn't this be a fine team w i t h o u t a pitcher? Costello: Tell me the pitcher's name. Abbott: Tomorrow. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ Costello: Now, when the guy at bat bunts the ball--me being a good catcher--I want to throw the guy out at first base, so I pick up the ball and throw it to who? Abbott: Now, that's he first thing you've said right. Costello: I DON'T EVEN KNOW WHAT I'M TALKING ABOUT! Abbott: Don't get excited. Take it easy. Costello: I throw the ball to first base, whoever it is grabs the ball, so the guy runs to second. Who picks up the ball and throws it to what. What throws it to I don't know. I don't know throws it back to tomorrow--a triple play. Abbott: Yeah, it could be. Costello: Another guy gets up and it's a long ball to center. Abbott: Because. Costello: Why? I don't know. And I don't care. Abbott: What was that? Costello: I said, I DON'T CARE! Abbott: Oh, that's our shortstop!
