+DraGma. Ships in the UK have similar standards on most of their ships. I was once called to a chartered Greek car ferry and simply could not believe what I was seeing. At first, I thought that the floor was flooded, but I soon discovered that I was walking around in half an inch of oil, fuel and rust.

I do tech service work on various marine vessels. Out of all the years I've been doing it, the only ones who ever tried to stiff us on payment was a Greek owned and operated vessel. The vessel operators agreed to pay in Master's cash based on an estimate. I completed the job, submitted the report to the Captain for acceptance and payment, Captain claims that he cannot pay in Master's cash for the job completed, which came in under estimate. We are talking a couple thousand dollars here. It came to threatening to go to the bridge and undo the work that I had done, and that the Coast Guard would be contacted and notified that the vessel was not able to operate in US waters. Suddenly the Captain disappears into his state room and returns with cash in hand to the exact amount specified.

A lot of People don’t seem to understand how big a 250 hp diesel engine is. In a gas car, 250hp is very common in V6s. But in a diesel motor With 250 hp Is often capable of having 600+ ft lbs of torque, while the average 250hp Car prob has 200-300ft lbs of torque. And to use THAT MUCH POWER just to start your actual engine is just AWESOME!

It doesn't necessarily HAVE to be closed when the air compressors are running, it just prevents the starting tanks from being drained just by the air solenoid for the starter leaking, Everything leaks air, even the solenoids. Over time, the tanks would drain, and then you'd have to get a "jump start", where another external source fills the tanks with compressed air. Or if the air compressor is electric, you'd have to wait for that to build up, The starting tanks must be able to start the engines like 15 times on one charge. Then the generator would (I think) supply power to the compressor(s) to build pressure.

+ShippingHarbors I was wondering about that, I seen and heard the low air pressure alarm go off, and you had said it does that when the valves aren't closed after the engines started up.

+RakinBill no, it happens when you start the engines. They need so much air that the air cylinders drop below the low pressure limit, and that activated the alarm. After a few minutes the compressor will fill the cylinders back to normal pressure.
