As a born American, i constantly take many things for granted. Recently met an older German gentleman that told me "thank you, America is 1 of the last good guys left in the world. The US saved millions of German people and the country in and after ww2. Thank you." Felt incredibly humbled, ashamed and embarrassed after that. Seeing these ww2 vets felt the same, uplifting and a gut punch at the same time

They did so with grace, dignity, pride and much faith. David Muir's interactions with the veterans is touching and very important. Our freedoms came at a price. That is profoundly true. My grandfather landed on Utah beach and was injured by a mortar. His guts were coming out and he had to wrap his arms as tightly as he could across his stomach to hold them in. They operated on him right there on the beach and sent him across the channel to heal. They wanted to send him home but he refused. He requested to be sent back to his unit. So they wanted to make him a lieutenant and a raise in pay but he refused that because he said that every lieutenant he knew were killed right off the boat because of the two stripes on the helmet. They sent him back to France where he shot a sniper up in a chateau window. It took him 3 hrs to crawl a distance that should of only taken 15 min. He shot that sniper right through the eye. His flash from the scope gave my grandpa the edge. He saved 22 men from death but 15 were killed while pinned down. He went on to fight in the Ardennes where he was in a foxhole for 5 days without food or water. He smelled potatoes every time the bombs went off in the field. So he had his men cover him while he ran out to get those potatoes. Potatoes saved his life he said. I always wondered why he would hold a slice of potatoe up in the air and close his eyes as if he were praying. One day i asked him why he did that and thats when he told me about the war. I love and miss my grandpa so much!

My dad died in 1990, and he refused to talk about WWII. I know he kept equipment from the war in our barn next to the cows' area, but I never saw him go out and use it once. He seemed like a broken man to me. They said there would be no more war, but I lived through the Vietnam War. My husband served four years, and he still doesn't know what they were fighting for.

Twenty-five years ago, I was stationed in Baumholder, Germany, and had planned on taking a trip to Normandy, to mark the 55th anniversary of the landings. Unfortunately, we received orders to deploy to Bosnia. I have so many memories of that deployment, but they don't compare to the memories that the men who took part in the D-Day assault and battles thereafter. Words cannot convey the respect I have for those men!

The grace, humility and selfless service these great men gave to help save our world is truly awe inspiring. They are truly our “greatest generation.” No other group has given more to make our country and world what it is today. My dad passed away at 91 last year. He was too young to have served in WWII, but his lifelong desire was to go to Normandy to honor those who sacrificed everything. Sadly, we didn’t make it back. One day I will go there to fulfill his dream. He was such a history buff and never tired of watching WWII movies that were historically accurate.
