Even in my rural community in Michigan, we heard of this disaster. My school raised money to send and there was a plaque in our Elementary school. Exceedingly tragic. I already have this site marked in Google Earth for years now. Tremendous number of deaths and that slag was hard to remove. Thank you for taking us to this place so we can mourn them also.

I was 6 and living in Ebbw Vale (next valley over), when this happened. My Dad and Uncle, both miners, went over to help recover the children. I have never forgotten their tear streaked, soot and dirt covered faces on the day they came home. The memorials are beautiful.

I still remember the horror of this disaster. A whole generation of children lost in a simple mining town along with the main employment opportunities. Even the Queen had tears in her eyes when she visited the site as they were still digging to find little lost souls.Heartbreaking, even 57 years on.

This happened 8 weeks before I was born and had a great affect on the country, for many years. How absolutely tragic for the parents. Some not losing one child, but two... May they all RIP. 😔💐
