A beautiful film by epic music scene film maker Tony Gatlif with Cuban legends Tata Guines and Pancho Quinto, while young Michael Herrera Duarte (Lucumi) stars as the centerpiece of the story. Lucumi is ten and lives in Havana's black district. Brought up to the beat of drums, he dreams of becoming a great rumbero. With other kids on his block he improvises rumbas on old cans and pots and pans. One Saturday the best of Havana's musicians decide to get together at the "Solar California" to honor the memory of Chano Pozo, otherwise known as "the drum of Cuba". With the rumba beat, Lucumi sings, dances, plays and talks about his life, as if better to express the hardships he's already endured and to have his message heard, he joins up with the great rumberos and wakes up the old spirits of the tumbadora. A version of ARAWE, from the tribe of Yoruba brought to Cuba during the days of slavery.. Most motivating percussion experience I've seen and thanks for posting.

Sorry, I tried to respond to an earlier reply asking on the whereabouts of Luku, but it didnt bring the entire conversation across. This is a short clip from the end of a short documentary/film around Luku, it also features Tata Guines earlier in the film. I have it in my collection, its a great short movie.

In Cuba, the drum is played with feelings so strong and emotional that some become entranced in the souls of our ancestry. Translate.

I am happy to here that you also experience the trance, I had witnessed it since my early youth at my home, my mom had this type of event in our basement in NY, I play congas at home now and I am in a trance as well, it is a cleansing, it is so powerful, imagine that with all of the horrors of slavery that this is how the Afrocuban slaves survived slavery. It is so powerful, that since slavery sundays were given to the slaves to play their drums cause the notice was taken that slaves were happy and strong while they were allowed to play and dance to the drums, as it turned out, this became a holiday in Cuba called Carnavales to later be enjoyed by all Cubans not just the slaves.
