I love vampire movies so I really wish I could have seen it the way you did, but I had a lot of problems with this one. I really found the characters to be generic and uninteresting. I also found it to be so predictable for most of the movie, that even when there was a bit of a twist/different direction it went in towards the end, I was checked out at that point. It had its moments, but I was mostly letdown and somewhat bored with it. I love your channel Cody, and I’m so happy that this movie is working so well for you and many other people! I had a lot of fun watching this movie. It looked great, well acted. I enjoyed how it set up the characters so that I liked and was invested in them before the killing started, and the same with Abigail herself. Knowing she’s acting, waiting for the reveal, realising she’s only half acting… she’s a badass but still a lonely kid. And the playful death dancing showing delight in the kill was beautiful. Was really glad I saw it in the cinema.

From Dusk To Dawn previews show a kidnapping story only, big shock in the middle when out of the blue VAMPIRES pop out! Got me. The same with Midnight Mass's reveal that it was a vampire all along. Got me twice. Unfortunately for Abigail, almost the same plot as Dusk To Dawn, the big surprise is ruined by the previews. There are enough scenes in Abigail for instance the pool of corpses, the kidnappers turning on each other, that if edited fast and done right for the preview would have kept the big surprise for the film. What we're left with is just snoozing along for the first half of the film knowing more than the characters in it.

This is perhaps the best horror movie so far this year, which is not too surprising since most of the so-called thrillers or horror movies these days are quite awful. Unlike many of them, which just showed people getting menaced and killed with the viewer having little idea what was happening, and then tried to wrap it up with some forced "explanation" or "backstory" at the end, this movie at least played it straight. Also, each of the kidnapper characters at least had some minimal writing, instead of just being put in to fill the death quota. On the negative side, it was highly predictable and there was little doubt which character was going to survive. There were also the usual jump scares and cliches like splitting up the team to search for the girl even after knowing who the girl was! Still, very much worth watching.

I just watched Abigail, now that it’s finally reasonably priced to rent, and I really liked it. I do tend to agree that the marketing exposition gave away too much - can you imagine the twist reveal of finding out that Abigail was a vampire had the trailer not already revealed that? - but there are some nitpicks. My main one was that they were trying their best to kill Abigail, then decided to use the sedative on her, which they did, but then didn’t stake her through the heart while she was under? I know that kills the plot, but it’s a stupid plot hole that they should have had a better way to address. Overall though - very fun movie.

Cody! This is one of the few times we are just going to have to disagree. I think the trailer ruined the first 30 min of the movie. A lot of the dialogue was atrocious, but then I was like: “am I wrong? Is it supposed to be bad like an 80s B movie? Did directors intend us to know what the characters don’t, and if so it just didn’t work for me. Maybe I was in a bad mood, but this is also a case where I was saying “why didn’t you do this?…shit you have the opportunity to do this why not!” To me it seemed like these guys loved from dusk till dawn so much that they wanted to do their own spin on things. My Review Background - A group of people unknown to one another are given the task to kidnap a young girl for a ransom of 50 million dollars. However after kidnapping her they find she is the daughter of a dreaded mafia boss. Left with no option they decide to hold her for one night before they can collect the money. But they do not realize that the real threat to them may not come from the outside but from within their hiding place. Likes - This is a very well crafted movie. The premise is great. The plot is very well paced and executed. And the production and technical values are great. And it is superbly supported by a very committed cast. This is a sort of movie where everything falls into place. Well, almost. But for the most part Abigail is right on the money in its idea and execution. Dislikes - Its the culmination that will divide people. As long as Abigail mixed the action thriller genre with vampire theme, it was great. Every minute was gripping and unpredictable. You could never guess what is going to happen next. However as the plot transformed from being a thriller to an all out vampire movie it really lost its bite. You could sense contrivance in the plot and it became fairly predictable what is going to happen. And final series of plot twists sort of made the whole narrative before them redundant. Its not that the climax was badly executed or lacked thrills. The climax was also well executed and had its share of thrills. Its just that the final plot twist(s) sort of made the entire narrative leading to it redundant. And that was definitely disappointing. Final Opinion - Abigail came very close to greatness. Real greatness. As I said this is movie where everything fell right in its place from the start. But it definitely suffers from a climax which failed to do justice to the brilliant narrative before it. But its definitely a great watch. What really impressed me was great technical values of the movie. I do not know of the director but this is a definitely a director's movie. The sharpness of direction and the assistance from the cinematographer and superb action choreography are the highlights of the movie. If only the movie had stuck with its original set up till the very end it would have been one of the better movies of the decade. I give Abigail a 7.5.

Abigail was fantastic! Our tastes tend to align a lot Cody and this is now my favorite movie of the year so far as well.

I’ve never even heard of this movie but I’m definitely intrigued and I hope this will be the shot of adrenaline the vampire genre needs, along with Nosferatu in December. Looking forward to a review of Infested/Vermines if you are able/want to. It’s my most anticipated upcoming horror film and seems like it’ll be a real treat for all the arachnophiles like me out there.

I prefer to watch reviews after i see the movie.. but i was curious if you're gonna review The First Omen. I'm really curious to hear your thoughts. I loved it. Definitely wasn't expecting much.

🖐 (even though I love Saw), NOT traditionally a horror fan. I like vampire movies though. Did like Daybreakers (that was really cool), and I Am Legend. And, I just saw Lost Boys for a friend's birthday about 2 months ago (which, to me, was.... eh? Not sure how I feel about it. Not really an 80's movie girl, even though I was born at the back end of the decade). But, on the whole, not a horror fan ...Not until this movie. I love this movie. Saw it opening night, and I'm still thinking about it. I want more stuff from this world! There's so much to mine here. How did Abigail come to be? How did her father become a vampire? When did they turn? What happens after the end of the movie?! Thinking of seeing it again today. It's just fun, and I loved it. Standouts to me were... pretty much everybody. Everyone had something fantastic to do here. Above and beyond though, I'd say Dan Stevens and Alisha Weir. Weir is a gem, and she's incredible. Stevens's Frank is just a charming scuzzbucket of a human that I hated, then loved, then hated myself for loving. I'd never seen a Radio Silence film, so how they played with vampire lore was something I enjoyed a lot. All in all, I want people to see this, for them to have fun, and to get more from this world. It's a cult classic from the get go. And great job on the review! It was actually this review that pushed me to seeing it; I was on the fence, but then I watched your review and decided to watch it with friends. So, thank you!! You're a good human, Mr. Leach!
