Another serious side-effect that I would be aware of is akathisia. I personally experienced this and ended up in the trauma unit of the emergency room. If is a movement disorder that causes severe feelings of inner restlessness and can be a motivating factor for su***de. I don’t think it happens very often, but it is definitely important to note. Luckily I am friends with a psych nurse who was able to tell me what was going on, because I had trouble receiving a proper diagnosis in the hospital.

@@jasonblue9297 hi! Although I’m not trained in medicine, I know that doctors will generally ask for a history to rule out manic-like episodes, ADHD and things like that. Personally, with how I experienced it, It was so incredibly distracting and debilitating that I wasn’t able to focus on anything, even a negative habit like gambling would be considered. In my case, I could not sit for more than 30 seconds, or stand. I couldn’t lay down to sleep, paced back and forth, and showered twelve (yes, twelve) times in one hour. It felt physically as though there was something inside of me that needed to crawl out, or that I just needed to come out of my own skin. Incredibly hard to describe verbally, and so scary to experience. I truly believe that if I had not received help only hours after the symptoms presented themselves, I wouldn’t be here today. The treatment for it, oddly enough, is Benadryl.

I’m quite skinny. I’m below my BMI. And I’ve noticed almost constant fatigue, tiredness, and super dry eyes. I suffer from Diverculitis which makes gaining weight difficult. My psychiatrist has prescribed this to help manage PTSD anxiety. Has the 5mg made a significant difference? Yes, my “spicy Latina attitude” isn’t so “spicy”…. I’m more submissive to my partner now. I “give in” easily now rather than being stubborn. Just wish the Abilify 5mg didn’t cause extreme tiredness. I regularly exercise… so, I may need to modify my routine as to exercise in the mornings as well to wake-up my mind. Thank you for your informative insight.

@Ellie Palacios it's a known permanent side effect due to brain damage cause by the meds. It was prescribed to me off label for anxiety and this devastating side effect is not worth it to me, id rather have a glass of wine instead. For people with schizophrenia that causes hallucinations this is a great med because hallucinations can be very scary so then maybe the side effects are worth it.
