.Sandy' was the USAF call-sign for A-1s that escorted rescue helos into N. Vietnam. It's still used to designate CSAR escort today.

I was NFO with VAW-13 DET 1 flying rightseat in EA1F's on Yankee Station 1966-67 Providing ECM support for the Navy .

My Dad always spoke highly of the Spad. He was on the Tico for a short time after the Oriskany fire.

@@airailimages Much appreciated for the videos. Dad was with VF-111 when they were flying F-8s. He loved them and the A-4s also. The Saints were flying A-4s, and VF-162 was flying F-8s.

'Thanks for an awesome Blast From The Past! Keep up the good work!! Able Dog' was from the WWII US phonetic alphabet. Nowadays, it would 'Alpha Delta'. The US switched to the current NATO standard alphabet in the '60s. 'SPAD' was an abbreviation for 'Single Place AD'. Because of the A-1's age (and being a piston aircraft in the jet age), the term was applied to all A-1s as a reference to the ancient WWI French fighter.
