Tom, what I love about your tutorials is that they don't just show various features, but show them in context - what can be done with them. That's make it easy to remember what the feature does, and of course is quite an inspiration. Learning this way is really fun! Continue please, please, please!

next step is that you can group notes that are triggered together at a given probability . the whole elektron stuff is much more elaborated. and/or/neighbor functions would make this more exciting than it already is. let's hope for future updates love your content

5:19 - "This makes it much quicker to tweak a groove setting, and also makes it easier to discover that this is actually something you can do." I really like your emphasis on discoverability here. When designing for a ficticious "ideal" user who reads product manuals and release notes word-for-word and remembers them with perfect recall, it's enough for software to just _have_ features. But we're not ideal users. We're people. And we can be completely unaware of some features if they're not *discoverable.* That's a key word in UX design, and I have a feeling that your use of the word "discover" here is no coincidence. I'm enjoying this video not just as a Live user looking for the best ways to use the software's features, but as someone who, like you, appreciates good UX design just as its own thing. And sometimes things pass under my nose unrecognized, so I appreciate you pointing that out. The macro randomization, combined with the "exclude", seems like a good way to "carve" out a sound iteratively. You can randomize until you find something that sounds pretty good, then start freezing macros that you know are contributing to the "goodness", randomize the rest of the macros until it sounds even better, freeze some more macros, randomize again, rinse, repeat, until everything is just about where you want it. Then you can save it as a preset and fine-tune the controls.

Is there some way to modulate the "note chance" parameter in Ableton 11 by mapping to a midi controller? I want to easily change the probability of a MIDI note being played, without having to manually adjust the parameter.

Velocity range would look a lot better if working like random knob in Velocity device, creating some “random velocity cloud” around the note.

Hey Tom, love your stuff. Im considering getting into Ableton and perhaps getting a midi controller like the launch control xl or push 2, and these new features of Ableton 11 is really making me even more interested. I wonder though, is it possible to map a midi rotary encoder or slider to modulate parameters such as probability and velocity range? I think that would be a more fun way to experiment with these parameters and also perform live! For exempel creating a drum transition like the intro in Go go penguin - All res. Thanks for your brilliant content

Fair warning I'm still waiting for the 11 beta so I'm only on 10, but it doesn't look like you can automate the new per note velocity probability or note chance (which would be pretty useless anyway). What you could do is add a velocity midi effect, which means you can automate the range, randomness, velocity curve etc overall post clip, but not of each individual note.
@Krilin84
3 жыл бұрын
@@LunicussOfficial thanks for the response, that would probably be more what I had in mind anyway, so that's great. If need to keep certain notes from changing I can always make a main track for the device and then make separate routed midi tracks for the notes and just use the modulation control on selected ones, right?
@LunicussOfficial
3 жыл бұрын
@@Krilin84 So the velocity midi effect modifies the entire channel at once and I don't think there's anyway to exclude randomization from set individual set notes, but yeah you could definitely just have two tracks one with it and one without. You coullld have multiple chains on a midi effect rack to separate the input midi data depending on ranges of notes, so for example if you wanted to make all the low notes static velocity and higher notes random you could make everything below C1 run through a random effect, but this wouldn't allow you to make 1 middle C random and then the next static unless you also automate the random effect on and off, but that's messier than your solution.

As @Max has said, probably the best way to do that would be with MIDI FX. The Velocity effect does the trick and there are also some cool Max For Live devices that do similar things for Probability, and you can map a MIDI controller to those. Check out Chance TEN from Isotonik Studios: isotonikstudios.com/product/chance-ten-probability-based-inspiration/

thank you for this. do you know if there's a way to compress the velocity notes? In cubase there's a tap at the right of any selcted range of velocity notes and it lets you compress or scale all the highest values to meet the lowest values in the middle. It's one of the main reasons I still use cubase because I don't like using the velocity plugin for this.

Great demonstration, love the new features; however, it's a bit ironic that the whole video is terribly normalised for loudness. I kept having to turn my volume up and down depending on whether the voice over or the audio was running. I'd turn my volume up to hear the drums/ chords and then as soon as the voiceover came in it'd blow my eardrums off in comparison. I think you should re-mix the audio guys. It's really distracting and a bit ironic considering you lot have access to the best DAW out. Ableton forever, but stage that gain goddammit! Peace x

Also what kind of potato laptop must this instance of Live be running on for 20% the cpu to be used on such a simple beat? If the computer is in fact not a potato, some optimisation is seriously in order guys. By the time you'd turned this beat into a track you'd be crashing and overheating no?

I use Ableton on both Mac and PC and , other than keyboard shortcut differences, it’s the same. And, as long as you don’t use AU plugins on the Mac side, Ableton projects can be shared between platforms.
