you dont need 18 mins to explain this, its simple...make eq cuts before the compressor and bosts after to compressor, when you make the cuts before the compressor it makes sure the compressor only works in frequencies that you actually gonna use, when you bost your eq after it makes sure the compressor its not screwing with your spectral dinamics.

Wouldn't it make sense to just put an EQ before the compressor to remove any unwanted frequencies? That way your compressor is not overworking trying to compress frequencies you don't even want anyways. Then it would be a matter of just adding another EQ after the compressor to boost desired frequencies. It would be like taking out of your bag those ugly jeans your not going to wear anyways so you can actually close your bag which will probably make taking the socks out a lot easier, perhaps?

I know this is 7 months ago. I think it depends on what EQ you're doing. If you're gonna filter/roll off highs and/or lows, then EQ before compressor works great (of course, IMO). If you're gonna boost or notch any freqs, then the compressor would act hard on those boosts and notches, kind of counter-acting what you'd tried to achieve with the EQ.

You should watch your meters. De huge push on the compression makes the kick essentially louder. If you A-B, you really have to keep the volumes equal. A louder kick is almost always going to sound better, even if your sound itself doesn't improve. And red. Too much red.

If you boost before the compressor but you want the same gain. Just bring up the make up gain on the compressor or / and bring up the threshold until you get a gain you'd get with boosting after compressing. The only difference here is that boosting before compressing is that the boosted frequencies trigger the compressor to compress the signal. If the boosted frequencies contain sharp transients, the effect will be much more noticable.

The reason why it was distorting when you eq after was because it was going past 0 db. You only really eq after compression because there is a frequency that is really low, which you can tell by viewing the spectrum analyzer

Hi, well made video....look forward to checking out others. I would have to argue that the gain structure for your A B are not the same...of coarse its louder you added tons of gain to the low end, and over driving the signal as you can see on the plug strip meters. Again i would argue that you should almost never fully compress anything with low end....parallel compression necessary to keep the integrity of the subsonic dynamics.

Great Video!!. I am a Ableton user currently learning about ProTools. But Do you think Pro-tools is better then Ableton for mastering/ recording the songs? and Audio 16 bit 48 hrtz conversion? Ableton sounds great while it is live recording and play back but whenever I render the songs to hard drive the sound quality drops? whats your opinion?
@lennybeatz
9 жыл бұрын
+EssentialBodyFitness (Independent Trainer) you probably do something wrong. because the quality doesn't drop by rendering. make sure your preferences are set up right and you master the right thing. mixing is very difficult and taking your finished song to another soundsystem often leaves you disappointed. I haven't had my hands on pro tools yet but there are rumors its MUCH better... ;)

When I was mixing in my studio I was wondering what came first. I remember in doing live sound compression on speakers was always the first thing that happen before reaching the board with all the effects. I like the way Matt Donner showed the difference in the sound of both ways. The key is to listen to the type of sound and intonation of that sound of the kick and see if it fits into the whole mix. When it comes to mixing, one wants to create a balance between the low frequencies and the high frequencies and blending sounds within a mix is important and this creates overall balance. In this case, I notice there are low keyboard synthesizer sounds where the intonation of the kick actually helps built the low end of the music when compression was first and eq second. Also like the explanation of the pitch to frequency mappings. First time I seen that version, but there is also the James Husted Symetrix pdf file that you can download at www.gregspianoforte.com/Ranges.pdf Notice the key note C on the bass line is at 65.41 hz. Same principle and this chart has help me in understanding frequencies to use for different instruments. Most people are not aware of this mapping but I have seen Paul McCartney use a similar approach - He maps his music out in regards to placement and frequency response. .

Wow, I learned something new today. I always did it the other way round, first EQ, then Compressor, but it seems like there are good reasons to do it the other way round sometimes. I got some awesome results lately, but maybe it might take my audio just a bit further switching the overall EQ and overall Compressor. Nevertheless all other EQs for single mixtracks work before the overall compressor, maybe I should find a way to work around that, too...
