I did find the same issues with visibility using an external power supply too, just not quite bright enough to be immediately clear - I guess once you know your way around the unit, this wil be less of a concern.

I dont think the LCD was dim, I just found the function buttons a little hard to read at certain angles, but as I said in the above comment, once you know your way around, this is less of a problem.

it's worth repeating that VSTi can indeed be loaded with Push. create an instrument rack with each of your VSTi and save to user library. search youtube for "Using Ableton Push To Control Non-Ableton VSTi"

Cool review! Your cons did not made me decide not to buy Push... I'm gonna buy it for sure now... This is the first review I saw from a non Ableton Certified Teacher (or are U?) and from a more practical approach... I liked that very much...

if anyone is thinking about this 10 years later, I just goy the original Push one for £75 and it’s brilliant! Built like a tank and works great with Ableton 11. It’s not a flash as the 2 or 3, with its more basic screen and obviously a few fewer features but it can’t be beat at the price!

Great review as usual. I guess you can get some basic lights feedback in user mode by routing MIDI output from Push back to the unit (just like with Launchpad). I think you can also do pretty wicked stuff even without Max (Lauchpad 85/95 map is a good example how far you can go by changing only remote script). Anyway, it seems to really kick ass in terms of Live workflow.

I have two minor gripes so far, one is that the pads get dirty quick and it won't be very easy to keep clean. Two, the note repeat/scene launch buttons should have been pads as well. The buttons make it hard to accurately launch scenes, when your doing faster stuff. Other than that I have been extremely happy with fit, form and finish.

I wonder if the Bitwig guys will have extensive support for this controller. It looks like a lot of the concepts and design features will translate across very well.

It was tricky to get right without making the pads appear less vibrant than they actually were - sorry about that, hopefully it doesn't affect the content too much.

I would love to hear more about how it allowed you to get into live. Like you, the Metaphor for live somewhat eludes me. I have it, but haven't really used it. Maybe this would provide the mental breakthru?

Hi, i'm totally new comer with DAW&MIDI. do you think for someone new, the pads can substitute the keyboard. should one order the push in order to not just work with the computer? thankyou!

I watched a lot of reviews of Push, Nick. Yours is by far the best one! I have my Push for a week now and this has been the my best purchase for years - simply because it is so much fun! BTW you can add VSTs with Push - however you will first have to prepare these in an instrument rack and add them to your library (which makes a lot of sense anyway - having your fav VSTs in your library with properly assigned Macro knobs.)

Best reviews on the net imo. I dont like this ''in-scale'' playing. Imo learning chords and getting to understand the different notes etc is just a basic lesson for music making.. people are getting lazy with this stuff! All in all a great box if you use live (like myself), if it wasn't for the price I'd get it asap.

well, as far as I understand it can be achieved with a little trick, if you want the drums to play as an instrument, all you need to do is enclose your drum rack in an instrument rack... the "viceversa" is a bit less immediate I believe.

i dont really get down with the ableton live use only live crowd , ableton is just one tool in my box . i need my controllers to work with everything . im thinking about a PC Gaming keyboard for the Modes and Macros music people really should look into them or when someone re-makes the optimus maximus keyboard is cheaper ...

I noticed you said you wished you had more pads available while in drum mode. Not sure if you were aware, but if you use the touch strip while in the drumrack mode, it cycles through the different banks in the drum rack, so essentially you have quick access to seven banks.

Also regarding a couple of things you pointed out, I believe that I read you can make the backlights brighter by using an external PSU. Regarding the VST support, I guess you could work around it by wrapping them in racks and using macros.

I still use both, the Push is extremely useful for making good licks, because of the scales mode. However if you already play keyboards, than I wouldn't say it completely replaces that. Nothing is better for piano and organ than the good ol keyboard. Having said that, even for am accomplished keyboardist, push definitely brings something new and fresh to the table for laying down ideas. I can highly recommend for everyone! Hope that helps.
