In summer most, but not all, reindeer go to the high mountains to avoid the moskitos. There can be millions of moskitos around you at any given time, within a kilometer or so. You can eat the blueberries, and other berries, in all of Sweden, and you can drink the water in the streams in the north and in the mountains. If it tastes good it is good, no parasites etc. as in warmer countries.

I live about 100 km South of the Arctic Circle and I start to see the Northern light now and then from the second half of August every year. It is when it is getting dark in the evening. You can't see it during the Summer because then it is never dark at night. So if you would have stayed a little longer maybe you also could have seen the Northern light. :)

@Jonsson474

The other berries were probably crowberries or bog bilberries. They both look similar and are just like blueberries completely safe to eat. As is every natural berry in the northern part of Scandinavia. There are however some planted berries on bushes that might be poisonous. Crowberries doesn’t taste very good but when on a long hike where fresh water is sparse, you can chew them to get some liquid and then spit out the seeds and the peel. Prevents your mouth from drying out. Don’t eat to many though, they are mildly laxative. 😉 Bog bilberries are closely related to blueberries but tastes almost nothing. The only use they have is that you can make sun wine from them. Put the berries, water and sugar in a bottle and leave it in a sunny window for two or three weeks. Then remove the berries and drink. 🙂 Very nice vlog btw. Enjoyed it.

spending long periods alone in a cabin might be more difficult than you think. as well as the happy stuff like reading books, you need constant chores to keep you busy. not for any work ethic reason. but because the banality of financially unmotivated self-interested manual work like cooking or painting a room or making a fire gives you chance to surf the spiritual wave for hours on end. and as you are banal or menial, so you are physically productive as well as spiritually. you make a meal, improve a room, create woodsmoke. which tells you, if you have been harmlessly productive, that its been a day well spent.

I can see you are struggling, but I recognize it's not easy if you're not accustomed to Lapland. Your kids should have left the ipads at home, but on the other side youths of today are not as mentally strong as they used to be. I still hope you will have a great journey!

Struggling? We were never happier than when we were in Scandanavia. Everyhing north of the arctic circle was pure magic for us. As far as iPads, the kids dont own one.
