Abraham Lincoln was born on February 12, 1809, in a small log cabin in Kentucky. He grew up in a poor family and worked hard to educate himself by reading books. Later, he became a lawyer and got involved in politics.
Lincoln is most famous for being the 16th president of the United States. He became president in 1861, right before the Civil War started. The Civil War was a conflict between the northern states (the Union) and the southern states (the Confederacy), mostly about slavery and states' rights. Lincoln believed that the country should stay united and worked hard to end slavery.
In 1863, Lincoln gave one of his most famous speeches, the Gettysburg Address, where he talked about equality and freedom for all. He also signed the Emancipation Proclamation, which helped free enslaved people in the southern states.
Sadly, Lincoln was assassinated on April 14, 1865, by John Wilkes Booth, just as the Civil War was ending. His leadership and dedication to freedom made him one of the most respected and remembered presidents in U.S. history.
