This has the potential to make tanks more practical and creates new new opportunities for doctrines all of its own. With the ability to add or subtract armor packages to the tank, this could mean that two tank types could be utilized. Lighter tanks could be used for higher mobility situations. to have increased reconnaissance ability for an MBT chassis is major. The army could use this to cross fragile infrastructure like small bridges so the infantry wouldn’t have to cross water ways alone. It would also be great for training and maneuvers as it wouldn’t damage infrastructure and would reduce on fuel costs, not to mention it would make maintenance easier. Having a singular main tracked armored vehicle like this is much easier on logistics, universalizing parts for wartime use. With light and heavy tanks looking nearly the same, this would also confuse enemy intelligence on the approximate strength of allied units.

Based on what I've seen that our neer-peers have, a 120mm should be more than adequate. Perhaps design the turret so a 130mm can be mounted without having to redesign everything, but at the moment the Abram's current caliber is the only thing that doesn't need to be updated. This would also mean our old tanks and new tanks would have compatible ammunition and we could hand over our Abrams to countries that need them without major logistics concerns.

As far as the power pack being hybrid, switching the IC component to being diesel would be a major logistical improvement… needing a separate supply chain just to fuel MTB's is a nightmare. And heaven help any nation that has a mixed force of Abrams and other MTB's - like Poland, that is buying every spare top tier tank it can in order to replace all the tanks they gave to Ukraine, so they have a mixed force of American and South Korean MTB'S. But even for Nations running Abrams only as their MTB force it still means two separate fuel supply chains (one for the Abrams, one for every other ground vehicle, diesel military motorbikes exist just to make logistics easier), something that is extremely difficult for everyone besides the US with its massive logistics. In fact the argument for Australia getting the Abrams was that they would _only be used in a combined operation with America,_ so Australia could just use their fuel supply chain. As well, being able to use diesel means that civilian fuel infrastructure can be used _and scavenged ad hoc,_ very useful when it's a serious conflict and resources are at their limit … instead of the kurbstomps that the Abrams has been used in, … for now.

My question is if the design is versatile enough that if in the future the 120mm is inadequate can a larger gun be fit into the vehicle such as a 130 mm or 140mm cannon?
@classicgalactica5879
2 жыл бұрын
The Abrams X features an Electro-Thermal cannon. It has a much higher muzzle velocity and is more advanced than any existing 130mm gun. Nothing over 120mm is necessary. When ammunition becomes too large, a tank can't carry enough of it into combat.
@johnsilver9338
2 жыл бұрын
A 120mm gun with higher velocity has higher kinetic energy than a 130mm with previous slower velocity. This can be seen from the equation KE = 1/2mv^2 where velocity is more relevant as it's squared. But if 130mm also has higher velocity then 130mm may be the future but then again a new faster 120mm can also be developed.

Nothing beats a TC being able to pop the top and have a look around with his own eyes, also if auto loader packs up with no one in the turret how does one load the cannon? I would change a few things of this X.
@drosendahl
2 жыл бұрын
Not many TC:s wants to stick his/her head out in the middle of close combat if he doesn't have to. I suspect that situational awareness might actually increase with good cameras and screens but it all depends on the equipment (With the right placement of cameras you can get an awareness that is close to this films sponsor, just look some of the modern cars parking assists). For your second objection, that should not be a problem. An autoloader on this kind of vehicle have to be reliable (and its not that hard to construct). Sure it can fail, but any system can fail. You cant move the tank if the motor fails, you cant move the turret if the electricity fail and so on.
@--Dani

@@drosendahl I’m not saying it’s a bad tank, and certainly the TC is safer totally inside the tank but they already have amazing periscopes when buttoned up. The top of the turret will always be vulnerable and with no one in it sure it’s a safer tank, personally I don’t believe it or the T-14 would be as effective on battlefield all sensors being equal. This seems like a perfect lighter tank for the Marines, you make compelling arguments as well, I’m no expert myself. I would like to see an auto loader that can be manually loaded if needed… cheers👍
@drosendahl
2 жыл бұрын
@@--Dani "...all sensors being equal..." That is where you make your mistake. You replace the crew in the turret by more sensors/cameras, so they will not be equal. And even if they would be equal you will reach a point where the sensors is good enough so you get more info from a screen (think head up display) than by your eyes like you already do many times today with the thermal cameras. Then it make no sense sitting in the turret looking at that screen.
