it really took the dad dying for him to recognize he was being neglectful.

‘He won’t be here for my 21st, my graduation, my wedding, my kids’. Based on his prior behavior, what reason did OP have to think that he would’ve been at those things if the cancer HADN’T happened?

I kinda understand how he feels though. When you've been that starved for a parent's love like that for so long, it can be hard to throw it away when it's offered to you... Especially when that love has a literal expiration date attached to it.

i half get it, but "dying" doesn't change the past. Dad was neglectful in the past and only is now trying to reconnect literally to avoid judgement in the afterlife. I wish OP luck but i dont see a reason to clear dad's dying conscience when OP will be stuck with whatever aftermath that will occur

story 2: dude stop giving your mom such a free ride, she was as complicit in the abuse as your father was when he beat you.

I agree. My mom had 2 husbands, stepdads, after my her divorce from me and my brothers father. Both of them were toxic and verbally and emotionally abusive. We were only with them every other weekend, but not once did our mother ever stand up for us when they got belligerent. It's one of many things I find myself being angry with my mom about.

Agreed. There is nothing in this world more contemptable than a coward. She knew what was happening and did nothing to stop it. Perhaps out of fear of him getting violent with her (but she was OK with that happening to her kids). Maybe because she was afraid of being alone (as if there weren't 4 billion other men on the planet). She might have been afraid of losing some financial stability (they were already poor, and her father paid for the house and supported them). Maybe she was afraid of a social stigma associated with being in a domestic abuse situation (like being someone who turns a blind eye to it is somehow better). Any way you dice it, she did nothing out of fear, and that places her well beyond any hope of redemption. There's no logic to it, just weak rationalizations that don't hold up to even a moment's scrutiny. The only alternative to fear is that she approved of his actions. She just used him as her hatchet-man, but she was sadistic and wanted her children abused. Now she's old, alone and using feigned contrition to play the victim. Never forgive such people.

1st story hits harder to me as someone who suddenly lost a dad of heart attack. he wasnt the best father, he has some flaws in his parenting skill and also as a Husband as well, but he still tries his best I really appreciate it growing up. But id trade my soul to the devil to have the chance to get a heads up about his departure. Its Honestly a relief to hear OP give him a chance, Id regret it for the rest of my life if i didnt even give him a chance
