i would love to see an indepth course for absolute beginner. from covering cales, to exercises, to best practices, to exercises about practicing chords, arps, etc. even explaining what 1 should learn after the course. With so much information, finding a clear path and understanding what should be learned after what, is something i've always struggled with

If you want to learn all the fancy chords Jamal play get this package. gospelmusicians.com/beginners-package.html?category_id=21 But, mimicking in one thing and to understand what you do is something else. It would be impossible to pack all this theory on a DVDs of 1h30 ou 2h. Jamal Gives your the blue print of what he is doing in the key of C with the number system, but you have to put some work in order to apply it to all 12 key. This is where theory is important and you have lots of ressources on youtube extensive information.

Yo yo yo, peace and love brother. I am also from Ohio, Steubenville. It's a little south of Akron. So I am really loving your videos. I am a Rapper and I play bass, keys and sing. I have been creating a lot throughout my years. Disclaimer I never played in a church. So I have have watched this video several times cause the neo soul sound, thats rooted is gospel, is some of my favorite music. So this is like my third time watching and playing on keyboard and when you play the E chord you voice it in a way that I can never achieve because I play it Phrygian HWWWHHH. So I get E G B D for my chord and you played E G C E. Which is basically the natural minor or so I thought. How do you ultimately choose over B?

I recommend this video of his, it's what taught me to play. Its barebones, goes from the very beginning but shortcuts a lot of things you don't need to know. gospelmusicians.com/play-by-ear-1.html?category_id=32 this is for people that want to eventually play in church though. This video is probably like 10 years old but its a great tutorial.

You have to listen to the bass-line or bass note and that will determine the number. This is usually the lowest note in the progression.

Too many of these ‘beginner’ lessons or tutorials doesn’t seem beginner friendly at all. They talk about chords, but then throw in extra coloration to make it sound good. As a beginner, I’ve learned the standard chords to be composed of three keys, such as FAC. But when you start playing F-C-F-A-C-F, it no longer feels like it’s geared towards ‘absolute beginners, never played the piano.’ Inversions, adding a two additional F at the beginning and end, plus the C simply isn’t beginner-ish territory. The additional two F’s makes everything sound fuller, but (as a beginner), I think it confuses the beginner. Great/good musician doesn’t necessarily mean they can teach.

@@GospelMusicians ... Don’t get me wrong, I appreciate the video. I applaud musicians that can sight read well and play by ear because it’s very impressive. I certainly understand what you’re saying. Secondly, I download the MIDIculous iOS app and also the free version demo for my PC. Will the iOS version support sheet music when midi’s are imported like the program Synthesia?

I get what you are saying Strawberryyogurt0.... The number systems and progressions, to me is the easy part. Knowing what Voicing to play is what gets confusing. You have your triads/sus/7ths/9ths/13ths etc... Yet, i've been told certain voicings you wanna remove the 3rd and play it as the base, (different inversions) Its like how do you know what to play on the fly?? I guess thats where "practice" comes in!! The more you play and switch things up, you will start to memorize different chords/voicings..
@strawberryyogurt0

@@biggmt6832 .... I had to look up what ‘voicing‘ meant and found this as the first youtube result: kzitem.info/news/bejne/lo18mWp3hnyVm20. Is voicing just how someone interprets the sheet music? It sounds to me like you’re more in the intermediate level because I’m not sure what 7th/9th/13ths mean. Is 7th something like CEGD, and 9th with 5 keys pressed, etc? I think sus is suspended cords (CEG -> CDG, or CFG), and triads is just the standard cords, maybe I’m wrong. Are you talking about knowing which chord to play with what scale? I found three apps that I like: The first two has enough info reference material that I don’t think I need to buy until it goes on sale. The 3rd one, the free version is extremely limited. 1. Piano Chords and scales free plus in app purchase ($6.99) 2. Piano companion. Free plus in app purchase $10.99 I think) 3. Suggestor Freee plus in app purchase $11.99 I think (very cool app, but I haven’t decided if I want to buy it yet. I’ve only been learning piano for about two weeks. I can do scales slowly, and relatively quickly. But haven’t practiced much without looking at my hands. I’m trying to learn how to quickly remember what notes on the staff correspond to what letter, but more often, I still have to look at the keyboard. But the biggest issue is reflexively in milliseconds trying to identify a note. Sometimes it may take me 3-4 seconds to recall what a note is suppose to be. Do you have any suggestions or links to videos that can get a beginner to a more seasoned beginner stage if that makes any sense. Such as knowing quickly where to move your hands from one location to the next? I already downloaded some piano apps. They help, but it still takes time to remember which note is what understaffed.

@@strawberryyogurt0 Nah, im still somewhat a beginner as well! I stay far away from sheet music.. I can hear a melody and play it by ear and find what chords are needed to play it.. What i meant by voicings, yes , how many tones you use to play certain chords.. counting up the scale 7 keys, playing it with your triad would be 7ths.. 9ths is the playing the 7ths but adding the 2nd key in the scale (which is the 9th key from your root) There was a video that I watched a long time ago, cant find it now, where the guy broke down Every chord, from triads to Major 7ths, Majorminor 7ths etc.. but from my understanding, voicings are just what you prefer. The more keys you add to your chord, the more Lush it sounds. My best advice to you, and this is what helped me learn as much as i did. Is to learn to play other songs, as many songs as you can.. Dont have to be sheet music.. Pick your favorite songs that you like and search youtube tutorials on how to play them.. Practice and practice till you can play them good.. You will soon learn that alot of your favorite songs are either in the same key, or share the same similar chords!! I promise you, you will amazed at how many songs have the EXACT same chords, the person just played them in a different rhythm!!!

I love this. But I don’t understand that on the left hand was the note being played and on the right it was different. We’re some of your chords inverted? Why not follow the left hand note. Why were they inverted? That’s what’s confusing to me. Please help
@tropicvibe
4 жыл бұрын
He's not playing the exact chords for each note of the scale because this is a special movement. The real chords for each note of the C maj scale is C - Dm - Em - F - G - Am - Bdim. What he's playing is; C - Dm7 - E/C - F - G -Am - G/B - C He's basically playing through the entire scale using 3 chords which is most likely what you'd be playing if you were accompanying an actual song or a singer rather than 7 different chords. The inversions create movement that work with the left hand bass and push each chord towards the next chord. Also, imagine playing a song that only has 3 chords; C - F - G....are you going to play just CFG for the next 5 minutes without any relief? The inversions and alternating bass notes give the illusion of going somewhere while really not going anywhere plus you still keep the same 3 chords you're working with. P.S. Many chords are interchangeable and no strict rule as to what chords you're playing as the 2nd time he plays; C - Dm7 - Em7 - Fmaj7 - G - Am - G/B - C
