Don't consider FMJ as a hollow point but what he is saying not 100% true. Check out FMJ ballistic gel tests with 9mm and you will see they don't "just poke a hole".

@harrypeterson9287 Dude I served 8 years in the Army and been more firefights than I can count, the Army uses standard hardball ammunition unless you're an MP but even so they use standard hardball ammunition as well unless they buying their own ammo lol, but out of all my time in the Army we've always used standard hardball ammunition for both rifles and light and heavy machine guns, the only ordnance that is different is the armor piercing munitions that have either a steel or tungsten core, and if it's an Apache gunship packing a 20mm chaingun the ammo is usually depleted uranium rounds or explosive rounds

Winchester is great for Target and practice as stated. I use Harmony critical defense 115 grain 9 mm for home and carry. But have about 1800 rounds of the Winchester 9 mm for target and can be used for SHTF if necessary.

FMJ is also military ammo and has taken more names than any other, and a bigger caliber like .45 is no joke even in FMJ. The Army is using a 115gr FMJ. JHP is for self defense not just for better terminals from expansion but to not overpenetrate, dumping its energy only in the target, and the Hague Convention doesn't apply to the civilian world.

The bullet doesn't just make a hole in biological material. There is significant hydrodynamic shock and cavitation that disrupts normal biological functions.

Not with small caliber auto pistol velocities. There is a curve concerning velocity and hydrostatic tissue damage. 9mm is not fast enough to do the trick. Mass is a bigger factor at these sub or barely sonic speeds. You need 1500 fps or better to start getting significant shock damage. 9mm keeps trying, it lost 2 World Wars and needs expansive ammo to make it in US military service. It's too small or it's not fast enough, which one? Trade one aspect for the other and call it "self defense ammo". And fancy is sometimes more effective, sometimes not. Variables, and none provide mass for the ballistic advantage at these velocities. .45acp is better.

But has it not been proven that fired out of micro / sub compacts, which is what most of would carry (and have on hand more often than not), hollow points and defense rounds often don't even expand or open up out of short barrels, making them nothing more than very expensive fmj's?

We run only fmj in all our autos, no exception...we simply never bought into the hollow point hype...the vast, vast, very vast majority of us are never going to need a firearm to defend ourselves...and if I'm wrong the vast, vast, very vast majority of us will be happy to run ANY ammo we can lay hands on...fmj, hollow point, segmenting, birdshot, slugs, you name it...

There are somewhere in the area of 400 million guns in the US, yet there are only around 30,000 to 40,000 deaths from gunshot wounds per year. Either a very small percentage are used to shoot anyone, or there is a incredibly large percentage of ineffective shots. I'm guessing the first. Even as old as I am, with bad eyes, hands that shake, and so on, I can put most of the rounds from a pistol through a 4 inch circle at 7 yards and a 6 inch circle at 15 yards. That's pretty close to the size of a human heart, and if a 9mm round goes through a human heart, it really won't care if it is a FMJ or a hollow point. It is going to have massive blood loss from the chambers and cease to function within seconds.

All those crazy rounds they design trade one advantage for another in ballistic terms. Swapping mass for more expansion and velocity. 9mm starts off with half the mass of a .45acp and only 50% faster at best with fancier lighter ammo or a carbine. But if I was to get a 9mm, I like that SA35 Hi Power. They fixed the bugs and reviews are favorable. It is a pretty thing, 15 rounds of double tap. I'd run +P semi jacketed flat nose in it for sure. I'll stick with .45acp FMJ for the 1911, it works great.

Very true. Never assume that a new, uniformed gun owner understands the uses for different types of ammo. New people have even been known to do things like load bullets backwards, or have the safety on without knowing, and then ask “why does my gun not work?”. never assume that a person has taken the time to adequately familiarize themselves with their weapon. Count on them not reading the owners manual.
