Have a question you need to ask a professor? Need clarity on a concept discussed in class? How do you approach a Professor in University?
As a student, you have access to your Professors both in person through office hours & appointments and/or via email.
Meeting Your Prof in Person:
• Locate their office hours as per your syllabus. If the Professor’s office hours are not listed on the syllabus, or your Professor holds office hours on an appointment basis, contact your Professor via the email listed on your syllabus
1) Office Hours on the Syllabus:
• Come prepared to your professor’s office hours with a list of questions and/or specific concepts you’d like to discuss
• The more specific the better! Avoid asking professors to explain to you broad concepts discussed in lecture as it is time consuming to repeat the same information
2) Emailing Your Prof to set up an appointment:
• Start off the subject of your email with your course code to ensure that your email doesn’t end up in the junk folder
• In the body of your email, begin by introducing yourself as a student in the professor’s course, be sure to include the specific course code
• Ask to book an appointment with your Professor as per the syllabus guidelines
• Come prepared to your appointment with a list of questions and/or specific concepts you’d like to discuss…
Emailing Your Professor:
• If you don’t need to meet your Professor in person and feel your request or question can be handled via an email exchange, consider the following:
• Make sure you include your course code at the beginning of the subject heading
• Begin by briefly introducing yourself to your professor, and then begin discussing your question or request
• Keep your emails concise, to the point, and be sure to use formal language
• Expect a response from your professor anywhere from 24 to 48 hours, unless instructed otherwise. So if you’re requesting an extension from your professor, its important to keep this turn around time in mind!
