An interview with Syren Nagakyrie, author of "The Disabled Hiker's Guide to Western Washington and Oregon" and founder of the organization "Disabled Hikers." Syren shares about how they came to write the Disabled Hikers Guide -- the first book of its kind to include detailed trail guides, rating trail difficulty, and accessibility specifically helpful for disabled people. In addition to the book, Syren's organization advocates for improving trail accessibility with parks and recreation professionals through education and outreach.
The organization also connects disabled people interested in hiking with online and in-person communities, and Syren shares the transformative change possible when building a connection to other disabled people, to nature, and to each other. Included in this program is additional information about The Seattle Public Library's maps available for check out and resources for learning about Indigenous land.
