Hey Jen, I just came from the video where you quit your job. And I could relate 90% to it. As I was very much on top while studying accounting, then after graduating I worked at this company where I took many responsibilities, and was learning every day.. but somehow felt like a slave. finally after settling everything and understanding how things are.. I quit. I kept seeing those youtube videos about how to follow your passion and make a gazillion a day. And I'm trying to learn new things. I wasn't happy before and I don't think I'm happy now either. Are you happy after quitting?

I am way happier now that I’m working Part Time. I have more flexibility to do more passion projects & spend time with my family 😊. I don’t think I’ll be working Part Time forever but it’s what works for me & my family right now.

Industry jobs can be just like PA in workload if you don't have a backup person to cover or assist in the bookkeeping at least. It can be rough being the only person that can be called on for tax in your dept. Some departments are way overstaffed with knowledge redundancies that are seen as a luxury in crunch times. You just have to hope your company values their accounting function and wants to keep ya happy. FYE is rough. Quarterlies are rough. Especially if you're publicly traded, you have a lot of extra reporting requirements and more stringent deadlines. 3-7 day close is achievable and can be a good benchmark for your private accounting/industry job. Unless there's some major system conversion underway, you're understaffed. Either by headcount or the capacity of the rest of the department. The bigger the company, the higher the standard of entry. Larger, well-established companies are typically much better at managing resources. But you can get the same total compensation *and* a faster career track at a midsized company that people don't typically think to apply to. The fine print there is that some of those industry jobs at midsized private (or public) require you to be the superhero again like a Sr. in some PA service. So you have to be careful but you can find a really sweet industry job if you go for the middle instead of the top. Or, you start at a large company and then make that transition into midsized so you can get promoted, pay bumps, etc. Just one way to plan your career. A lot of people transition into finance by doing exactly what I just described. Although finance... and accounting. It's a bit scary to see how in less than 1 FY an AI/automated invoice processing system achieved like 70% accuracy and would pull support documents. That's available and it's way cheaper than having AP Clerks even though AP Clerks aren't known for high compensation. I wonder what it'll mean for general accounting. And PA too. It seems like things are progressing really quickly in terms of a turnkey system to just automate things without having a team of consultants to facilitate the system conversion. And then you just need to maintain it... with fewer people. It's a little stressful to consider that possibility becoming a reality. But it wouldn't just be accounting affected. As accountants we know it's probably software engineers who stand out to anyone looking at payroll. A financial controller at a F500 may make the same as someone with like 4 years of coding experience. There are a lot of "expensive" roles that companies will start seeing as unnecessary or replaceable. Whenever I feel a little bit like I chose the wrong field, I remember the grass isn't greener. I know a lot of people who work in tech that are worried at the moment.

Hi thank you so much for your helpful video. Hopefully you see this comment. 'm 22 years old and starting college to become a registres dental hygienist. I want to try and create an extra income stream for myself that is a little more flexible since working as a cashier doesn't give me that opportunity. Will I be able to pay the bills as a tax preparer? (Around 3K) but most importantly, is it risky? Since your working with IRS is there any risks? If so, how can you avoid them as a tax preparer especially as a begginer. Thank you

Hi Tanya! You can apply for remote positions that allow you to work part time or full time~ however, some positions may require a background and/or education in accounting. Working part time will allow for some flexibility. In terms of risk, as long as you have proper training you should be ok and there is usually, depending on where you work, several levels of review before returns are signed by a partner or director. Lmk if that answers your questions!

Hey Jen, I am so glad I found your channel! I am in the same boat thinking about transitioning. I have 4 year experience in public accounting and 1 year in industry. I also have a two year old toddler and we are thinking about expanding our family. I thought about teaching, being a KZitemr and all that but finally decided to transition to financial analyst. It is a good point that we could still work part time within accounting/finance rather than teaching. My last day will be next Friday, I am so excited that I will spend some time with my kid and then start to look for fa jobs.
