I had a buddy that went back to school for accounting in his 40's and completely changed his life around from what he had learned. Got out of debt, payed off his house, and make tons of money working as a freelance accountant. It is amazing watching someone going from living in their van down by the river to having a nice house in just a few years.

@carlosmilian8990
4 жыл бұрын
The reason of why I favor accounting over finance is because of the following reasons: 1. Accounting is more stable and provides a really good consistent pay especially if you have a CPA 2. Later down the road it’s not that competitive or hard to put a business related to what you studied 3. There is a bunch of freelance accounting work that is available to do 4. To get a good job after college does not take to much networking or having much connections as the ones that you should have if you want to land a prestigious finance position after college 5. Accounting is the language of business and working in accounting will definitely show you what businesses are good to invest in and what are good investments to make. 6. With an accounting degree you could work in finance, but with a finance degree you cannot work in accounting.

I probably would do accounting if I had to choose to do it all over again and could only choose one. I’d say overall maybe like 30% of all finance majors across the US reach that figure eventually in their careers. I’ve never seen/looked up data about this, so my number is just an educated guess.

I feel that you actually learn a "hard skill" by majoring in accounting. Accounting is a real skill, vs what you learn in your finance classes. The skill of investing is a real skill, but the finance major makes you learn in a lot of stuff that is not applicable to the average student who majors in it. It makes you a worker bee for companies, which has its place obviously, but if you want to learn how to invest on an individual basis than you need to teach yourself/learn outside of college.

Stuff like that but in the very beginning its just learning definitions and organizing things into accounts and balancing accounts. I wish I could have seen your videos about 6 years earlier. I have a Finance/Economics bachelor degree. Working on a master in international business. And will be going for my CMA in the near future . I realized I wanted a more flexible career to support my traveling itch. And accounting seems more versatile with remote opportunities. I did some consulting for financial modules of ERP systems as well. and that is basically all accounting with tech . I'm 6 years out of college and finally have an understanding of the market , it would have been great to already have that direction before hand but the reality is some times you just need to try different careers/professions and see how they align with your life ambitions. Personally i like both accounting & finance even i have been investing since 2019. I thought that doing a CPA is better since ill have 3years experience when i finish it but if i go to MS finance ill have 0 experience, (not easy to find part-time internships in my country). Not sure how things are run in Lebanon, but in America you need to have a certain number of accounting credits to sit for the CPA exams (which usually equals to a Masters in Accounting number of accounting credits). In most states, you need to pass your state’s real estate exam and then find a broker to work with. Not too many barriers to entry, but a lot of competition! I saw this comment "Accountants can do what finance people can do but finance people can’t do what accountants do." elsewhere. Do you think it is accurate? So would that be that I could become an accountant then have an easy transition to finances if I decide to?
@kailakaila
3 жыл бұрын
Yes and no. It really depends on what the individual company that is hiring is looking for. Say you have 5 years as a staff accountant and then change your mind and want to be a corporate financial analyst (non high finance), it could happen, might take a good amount of applications depending on your overall applicant profile, but you might be starting at the bottom again and have to work your way up. Lots of variables and you have to decide wether a switch would be overall worth it. The stronger the candidate you are, the more options you have (prestigious school, connections/network, etc). A finance professional switching to accounting is more rare. So that’s where that statement would hold more accuracy.

I’m pursuing my Bachelors in Accounting and Finance, do I need to have a concentration or no?
@kailakaila
4 жыл бұрын
Not necessarily. If you do decide to choose a concentration, make sure you are actually interested in those classes and there are job opportunities near where you live (or willing to live) relating to that concentration i.e. real estate concentration, investment management concentration, etc. I wouldn't sweat about it, employers are more concerned that you have a bachelors and finished college.

Hey Kalia. I have both Finance and accounting at my college. I was thinking about doing Accounting as my undergraduate and Finance as my Master's. Would this be a better option as supposed to doing Finance for both bachelor's and Master's?
@kailakaila

It’s an option, but I’d tell you if you are going for accounting undergrad, stick with accounting for masters too, so you can qualify to take CPA exams. If you want to go that route in your career.

@kailakaila

@@crystalcpg I would recommend accounting for undergrad and masters if your end goal is to be a controller. Most places prefer to hire a controller that has their CPA license. Having a stream lined path like that just makes things easier in the long run - less time spent trying to reach the end goal.

Thats because I didn't title the video "finance vs economics". My end advice is the same for every career you have interest in, no matter what it is, try and get some real world experience in it - wether that be volunteering, shadowing, internships, interviewing professionals, etc. You won't know what you like until you experience it, and sometimes you can't automatically get into whatever field you want from the get go. You have to level up, so take each experience you get and keep leveling up.

I can make a video addressing those topics. For your own personal investment choices, no college major is going to make anyone great at investing, even if you major in Finance. A lot of time outside of class is needed to study up on various investment opportunities and products, college just skims the top of each topic. And honestly you need to have a good, solid understanding of accounting, finance, and economics to be a good investor. To start a business, it really depends more on what type of business you want. If I had to pick out of accounting vs finance vs economics, which one teaches the most practical skills for running ANY type of business, accounting would win. If you wanted to pick one of the 3 to specifically start a business with the skills you learned while majoring in it, accounting would probably win again as you could start tax preparing/be an accountant, etc. Finance you need to lean more onto a financial product/service - wether that be mortgages, selling financial products as a financial advisor/wealth manager, insurance, etc. Economics would be the hardest to start a business with regarding that individual topic, maybe government contractor? I see a lot of economics majors go to work for the government. Or they end up in financial analyst and business analyst types of roles.
