My dad introduced me to Acid Mothers Temple about five years ago, but let me recount how he first came across them. He was living with a friend back in around 96, in Cork, Ireland's second largest city. This friend told my dad that some crazy psychedelic band from Japan were playing at a local venue that night and that he had to check them out. The venue in question I believe was The Lobby, but it was a famous bar for Irish traditional music - the walls were adorned with pictures of famous trad musicians from previous decades. Fast forward to the gig itself, AMT played their typical mind-melting tunes which was well received, and halfway through their set, one of the band took to the mic and asked if there were any requests. Some smartass in the crowd said "play some trad!" Apparently Makoto turned and said something to the rest of the band, they put down their instruments and gave a completely acapella rendition of a classic Irish trad song, sung in perfect Irish, then picked up their instruments and went back at it. If you ever get the chance to see these guys live, you have to take it. Never seen anything like them, and anytime they make it back to Ireland I drag everyone I can to the show!

Thanks for introducing me to this fantastic band. Like Japan's Pink Floyd or something. Amazing musicians, humble, cool, and crazy... just the way I like them. Very diverse tastes here. Geniuses.

I'm not too surprised, what with their love of Occitan music. "La Le Lo" (from Mantra of Love) and "La Novia" (from La Novia) are versions of traditional Occitan songs.

I'm surprised that no one has mentioned that Satya Sai Baba's followers manufactured Nag Champa (it's in the name even.) Some of the boxes use the same photo shown in this video @2:12. Unfortunately, the company has split into two, and the stuff made in Bangalore is still hand-rolled, and closer to the original scent, while the stuff from Mumbai, which is made by machines, and is said to smell nothing like Nag Champa, rather, instead, smelling like burning charcoal.

Cool dudes but listening to the first half of those records would be like sitting in a new age leftist baby boomer hell. Jerry Garcia on your left, some shiva baba dude on your right, and just passive aggressive constantly from all the pacifists around you that can never decide as a group if they want to listen to Indian spirituality, or Indian spirituality, or maybe flutes, or Jewish camp music....
