The composer provides the following description of "Subsonic Pulse" ~
Subsonic Pulse, written for wind quartet (two bassoons & two bass clarinets), was composed in the spring of 2023, for the Akropolis Chamber Music Institute. In this piece, I utilized the four low instruments to craft a captivating and vibrating low-frequency soundscape. As I delved into the process of composing this piece, my fascination with the low-frequency sound became an all-encompassing obsession. There is something profoundly primal and evocative about the earthy resonance that emanates from the depths of these instruments.
Wenbin Lyu is a Chinese composer based in Cincinnati. His compositions blend contemporary Western techniques with ancient Oriental culture, drawing inspiration from nature, science, and video games. His works have been featured at over 60 music festivals, such as Cabrillo, Tanglewood, Aldeburgh, NYCEMF, IRCAM, SEAMUS, and ICMC. He has collaborated with
acclaimed ensembles, including the Buffalo Philharmonic, Albany Symphony, Beijing Symphony, Eighth Blackbird, ICE, and Sandbox Percussion. Lyu has received one ASCAP Young Composer Award and three The American Prize awards.
