I think you misunderstood Gwen's universe. It just wasnt purple, blue and pink. It was a universe that changes depending on Gwens emotions. When she is sad, she is blue. When she was embracing her father in love, she and her father became pink. All of the scenes in that universe had the enviornments color tailored to her emotions.

I forget where I read it, but "Across" does end on a cliffhanger, but it is still a complete story... as long as you recognize it as Gwen's story more than Miles'. It starts with Gwen falling out with her father before going off to join Spider-Man 2099's group (which kept her apart from her friend Miles). Then she reunites with Miles and starts to realize that what Miguel is doing isn't nearly as great as she had thought. Miles resists and is punished for it; Gwen finally sees Miguel and his actions for what they are and turns her back on him. She reconciles with her father and goes to find Miles. In the end, she has assembled her own team (including some of the new heroes as well as her original team from the first movie) and is getting ready to fight for her friend.

Miles also has a complete character arc in this film. He starts by trying to escape his parents, his dimension and go to his friends, his love, this big fancy place with all these cool people. Miles is seeking a place to be among people who will validate him away from those who raised with whom he feels he is done with. By the end of the film Miles has forsaken the Spider Society as they were NOT right for him to put it lightly, he has turned away from the former friends who betrayed him and has (narratively) returned to his family and told them exactly who he is because now for the first time Miles knows exactly who he is. As most exemplified by his final expression.

It’s funny that you mention Two Towers and Empire Strikes Back, because I used those movies as examples of mid-parters that still gave that cathartic feeling of the completion of major story arcs while still leading into the next move, which is what I wish this had. This definitely feels like one movie chopped off at the end rather than two movies tied together because none of the conflicts are even slightly resolved by the end, not a single one. Well, I just realized that Gwen’s tiny side plot with her dad gets resolved but that’s about it.

Gwen and Miles both have entire character arcs that have immensely changed who they are, the main antagonist Spot has also had his origin character arc. The status quo has changed from hopeless oppression to the fires of revolution have been lit! I will say that last one though rarely do stories end like that satisfyingly.
I think Nando hits on one of my fears about this film, which is that it would feel like only the first half of a film rather than a film that could continue with a second part picking up threads. I said it elsewhere, but there's a difference between the Empire Strikes Back/Infinity War-style of a two-parter (where it feels like we got a full movie, but there's still a cliffhanger/more to go) compared to the two-parters we got for things like the final Harry Potter, Twilight, or Hunger Games films, where they felt like one film chopped in half. Still, I'm glad to hear what we got is pretty entertaining, it's what I'd hoped. Definitely gonna try to catch this in the next week, if I'm lucky (and GotG3, too).

I'm going to finish the video because I love your content Nando... really and truly... but I will say the Gwen word is meant to represent a mood ring. Each scene reflects the context of how she is feeling... it's also a reflection of how her comic is drawn. I personally think they've done an amazing job on this movie... it took this 4 years to design Spider Punk... and even down to the minuscule detail of every spider-man's web slinging sounds different... plus even though it was a cliff hanger... Miles and Gwen have full arcs. I think it's easy to nit pick what we would change.... but I want to instead acknowledge all of the hard work that made even the things that are missed, like the world being a different animation style and bit rate, possible. And let's not sleep on the soundtrack y'all. Great movie... and ok I'm going back to the video I just wanted to say that lol

I think the movie is fine on its own while also being a part 1 of 2. Gwen's arc feels like the real thread of the film pulling things together. And you see her cha ge from beginning to end. While this is still a trilogy around Miles, this middle chapter has Gwen doing heavy lifting and making this feel like it's own complete story within the story. It works. Not as clean as the first film, but most sequels struggle to be as smooth and clean as their originals. It works well enough where I didnt have the gripe of "this just a part one, boo".

While I think it tops the first movie and thus is now the best Spider-Man movie ever made, it did feel like getting the rug pulled out from under me having forgotten that. When it ended someone in the theater loudly yelled “Yo WHAT THE F--!?” Which felt like basically voicing the entire theater’s inner monologue. Afterwords the more I thought about it the more I came around on it in that the Spider-Verse movies feel like watching a comic book come to life and there isn’t a more comic book way to end a movie than a last-page cliffhanger, though I don’t think that’s necessarily a great justification. I’m OK with it though especially knowing the wait will be much shorter with Beyond coming out in less than a year.

It’s because of movies like Across the Spider-Verse that i love film, animation and comic books. I was curious if they were going to make something more mind blowing than the first movie (Which is still incredible) and they actually did it. It was a wild and fun experience to watch it in theaters and i can’t wait to see it again.

You say that you wish the movie was live action or something like that… and while I kinda get that….I’m incredibly grateful that was animated, i don’t think this movie could’ve been made this amazingly any other way .

Gotta say, I think a lot of people don’t understand how darker endings work. People said that Infinity War didn’t have a proper ending because Thanos one. But no, it has a beginning, middle, and end. It just ends differently than other movies. Based on what I’ve heard other people say about this movie’s ending, I’m sure when I walk out of the theater tonight I will disagree with you when it comes to the ending and the title of the movie. A movie can have a dark and ambiguous ending without it lacking a third act.

It’s great to hear someone echo my sentiments for the movie! Very well articulated Nando! Overall the movie didn’t work for me despite great visuals and action sequences. Was hoping for more from the narrative. Like you said, I didn’t realize this was a Part 1 of 2 kind of movie so I was very disappointed leaving the theatre Preciate you sharing your thoughts Nando!

i either didnt know or forgot it was part one, the ending left me deflated, and now i'm kinda thinking, there isn't going to be three movies, just two, the second being 4 hours long, part one was brilliant and fun and beautiful, but like i really feel like i have to watch part one just before i watch part two, so i still have the tension and emotions still in me to continue on this one long movie

I didn't know it was a part one. I didn't see any trailers before finally watching the movie two days ago, so I had no idea what to expect. I thought it was a little slow at the beginning, but I still didn't suspect it was a part one until I saw "to be continued on the screen". That said, I wasn't the least bit upset about the cliff hanger. I was just like, "oh...ok. " it didn't trouble me at all. In a way, it reminded me of my childhood when a TV show ended on cliff hangers and we had to wait months for the next segment. Yeah, yeah I'm showing my age....I'm ok with that 😄 I'm gonna go see it again in the theater (and will no doubt buy it when it is available.)

01:34 "If this was in live-action..." it would still be animation since all those fights use CGI and greenscreen meaning most of these movies are partly animated anyway. Drop the condescension.

Most live action superhero movies aren't stylized, though. And the effects look fake if the entire movie isn't animated.

Question: Alan Moore said Watchmen was unfilmable because of its utilization of the form of comics for visual storytelling. Do you think the "to be continued" was a faithful translation of the comic book medium using that same type of ending in a cinematic forum? My audience booed and then applauded. They did not know, but was it successful? Additionally, what do you think about one of the major themes of the movie being about being a minority? Also, if you didn't know that, I think you might need to watch it again, think about the conversation with his mother, and keep that theme in mind.

This is a pretty nice review, and I'm glad that you liked Across the Spiderverse, but I can tell that you're viewing the movie through and analytical standpoint rather than an artistic viewpoint, especially with the way you described how the other universes. Gwen's universe has these smeared watercolors that change depending on the mood of the scene, Pavitr's universe has the bombastic flair of Indian pop art, and (SPOILER ALERT HERE) Universe 42 having such a desolate shade of green and purple showcasing what a universe without Spiderman would look like. Like no offense, but it's pretty hard to ignore those nuances and call them all the same, seems like an insult towards to the animators and artists who worked on the movie. I'm pretty sure you didn't mean it like that, but still. A lot of these things, whether little or big, subtle or in-your-face, honestly could ONLY work in the medium of animation, especially with the freedom Lord & Miller's team got.

Loved the movie. I dont watch trailers anymore so i don't have any moments from the movie spoiled before i go to the theater. So i didn't know it would be a part 1. But at a certain point during the film I'm like this movie has been running a long time, it doesn't feel like they'll be able to finish the story. Then there's one scene and I'm like yeah no they aren't. This story is fantastic, ugh how long are they going to make me wait?

I had a blast watching this movie and Spider-Man isn't even my guy, ya know? But I've always enjoyed the struggle he gets to go through as a character. In respect to Spider-Qwen she really came into her own in this film, at least to me. Now I'm not one of those folks who _saw everything coming_ but I did like how the movie presented old tropes within new ones in order to keep us entertained. So Qwen spoke to me because I have a relationship like she does with her father. So her journey was able to jump at me moreso than Miles. I even related more to Spiderman 2099. Now I know movies like this are almost always going to land on the side goodguy when all is said and done, so the main character will most likely be right in the end through some event or whatever. Anyways, I liked how they dove into the conundrum of morality versus the greater good. Things also didn't seem forced, not that I mind (cause some crap has to be shouted sometimes), but I'm glad ideas were able to squeeze through without being hampered by the ole *"HEY LOOK AT ME, WE'Re being CULTURALLY RELEVANT!"* part of the movie, so that these ideas within the story could be seen without big shiny neon-colored blinkers pointing you to the correct answer. But yeah, kickass review and keep up the good work. I've always enjoyed this channel and appreciate what you bring to the community.

#1 I thought Gwen's world was beautiful. I liked Gwen in the first movie, but I loved her in this one. It inspired me to look up some of her comics to learn more about her. #2 The cliffhanger ending sat a bit funny with me upon first watch. The week before I saw the movie I learned it was a Part One, so I wasn't blindsided, but honestly, at this point in the movie it felt like it was just ramping up and I easily could have sat through another hour. But it just stops. However, after a second viewing, the movie played a lot better for me and the ending only served to pump me up for the next one. I love this world and can't wait to dive back into it, especially with the promise of some returning characters from the first movie.

So I do my best to avoid marketing for movies I already plan to see, which means I had NO idea that this was part 1 of 2. I was FURIOUS. The movie was wonderful, but does overindulge itself in a couple scenes, but I was willing to overlook that because I mistakenly assumed I was going to get a full meal story wise. When that turned out not to be the case, my frustration and lack of catharsis reached back in time and soured my enjoyment of the rest of the movie. I still have a knot in my chest from the disappointment, anger, and lack of fulfillment, but I wonder if that would leave on a second viewing where I know what I’m getting into.

Idk if the cliffhanger critique was levied at Dune and I may just be mistaken as to how it was marketed (I try to avoid most promotion material to like go in blind), but I remember feeling much less satisfied with the resolution at the end of that movie than I did with across the spiderverse even though both took a similar path. As far as cliffhangers go, I thought Spiderverse’s was pretty tasteful. It really left me at the edge of me seat excited for what’s next where with dune I remember just feeling like they hit a time quota and just said “see ya next time.” Not a dune hater, it’s just the last blockbuster movie I recall doing a big cliffhanger 😂
