17:58 - The shields drive the sandworms into a killing frenzy that's why noone uses shields anywhere in the desert. This was mentioned by Kynes in the first movie. Why exactly wasn't explained but due to how the shields are visualized I assume extremely fast vibrations are carried into the sand or similar, irritating the worms

He will have to change a lot to not have it lead to a children of dune movie. I think he put a lot of groundwork in by changing things to make it possible to end Paul’s Story in messiah without having to do children of dune as well. Children might be difficult enough to put to film but imagine having to show god emperor of dune to a mainstream audience even though I would love it 😊

Dune is not a pamphlet, is not propaganda, is a work of art that transcends his author. Even he contradicts himself in the rest of the books. I think he realizes too that he gained nothing trying to vilify Paul because it backfired when Messiah came out, like the Kwisatz Haderach backfired to the Bene Gesserit, that's kind of poetic.

"He's just repeating what people say to him." Wow, you are as hell-bent on making Paul a villian as others were too quick to make him into a hero. He's not trying to manipulate her in this scene, he's just trying to tell her that whatever makes her happy makes him happy. He's in love. You are right that vengeance never left him, but that does not mean he is not fully sincere about the Fremen. Both things can be true. Paul is both more and less a hero and a villian.....he's more complicated than either title. He's tragic. A good, but flawed man given too much power. Power is the problem.

Yeah, I think they got some of the early propaganda about Dune and thought it was fact. For example, Paul IS a hero from Frank Herbert. Dune Messiah was not created because people misunderstood his character, it was planned from the beginning to show the message, that even under the best of intentions, which Paul has, things can easily get way out of hand.

You're very close to understanding the "freeborn" and why it's "abomination". The memories that they inherit are memories from past female lines of their genetic line. These memories can be powerful. In Alia's case she is closer to what Paul is than just your normal Bene Gesserit is who won the goes the spice agony. She has, like Paul, personalities of the male line as well. The primary reason that is so dangerous, considered abomination, is because as a fetus or small child they have not developed their own personality so therefore any one of these other personalities could conceivably (and do) take over the child. Very similar to possession by a spirit. Alia is very much an abomination.

Denis used the phrase "power over spice is power over all" but the real quote from the book was stated by Paul and read "He who can destroy a thing has the real control of it". The reason that differentiation is important is that Paul is the only one who was willing to go to those lengths to achieve that goal. Destroying spice production was inconceivable to literally every other person in existence. This was critical because the Fremen were powerless against the Great Houses militarily. We saw when the Harkonnens attacked Sietch Tabr with aerial artillery the Fremen had no answer and were slaughtered on the ground. By threatening to end spice production permanently Paul controlled the Spacing Guild who every Great House was at the mercy of in terms of intergalactic movement. This meant the Great Houses would not be able to form a coalition and come to Arrakis and attack Paul and the Fremen since the Spacing Guild would never risk access to spice so they would refuse to go against Paul. The other thing I wanted to mention is that the Water of Life is actually bile from the stomach of the young sandworms. With regards to Jessica is that after she took the Water of Life and integrated all those other Reverend Mothers to her own personality, she went full Bene Gesserit in her tactics as she was fundamentally changed as a person by that act.

The thing that is important to remember though, is that if Paul didn't do what needed to be done, everyone he cares about dies. Everyone. Chani in this film might be right about how the prophecy is used to manipulate them, but the solution to avoid it is for her to die, and all her tribe. And anyone else sheltering Paul. There was one way to save everyone, and Paul took it to save everyone he cared about.

The kwisatz Haderach is the Bene Gesserit messiah. They had been breeding him for generations. For me this is the ultimate form of “be careful of what you wish for.” Both for the Fremen and the Bene Gesserit. Messiahs generally don’t do what you want them to.
@obelisk21
3 ай бұрын
I wouldn't call the Kwisatz Haderach a messiah as that infers he is a religious figure. The Bene Gesserit plan with cold analytical logic. There are no religious components to the Bene Gesserit society, they use religion as a tool to achieve their goals by manipulating others with it, but there is no basis for religious belief within the order itself. They came up with a plan to manipulate genetics to produce a man with the ability to see the future so he could lead humanity to a path of stability. They were trying to avoid the chaos of the past and came up with a way to mitigate that.

Since you asked, So much of this film series differs from the books, but given the aspects of the story they've chosen to tell I don't believe it detracts from it. For instance, the amount of time that passes between the slaughter of House Atreides to the duel with Feyd-Rautha takes mere months in the film, but years in the book. This compresses the time to develop relationships and practically eliminates the agency of the now unborn sister Alia, who was already several years old by the time the Emperor reached Arrakis. Chani doesn't really have time in this film to cultivate a deep connection with Paul either, so it makes more sense to have her not support him at the end of part 2, where she stood by him in the book. There are many other little omissions that were also not explored in either this film or the '84 David Lynch film that add context for certain characters or the Fremen as a whole, so it makes sense that those characters would not behave in the same way they do in the books as they do in this film, and why their motives in the '84 film seemed confusing. I appreciate that Denis Villeneuve and his writing team recognized the influence some of these events had on these characters and were able to alter these characters in a way that made sense with the new course of events, without losing the plot.

With “The Life of Brian” in mind, Gurney’s song lyrics would fit nicely in the Monty Pyhton bogus Hungarian phrase book, right next to “My hovercraft is full of eels.” Chani comes comically close to saying that her secret name is Zendaya. Control and confidence allow Margot to be the goddess of serenity. As with “The Boys From Brazil,” the Bene Gesserit don’t put all their eggs in one basket. Instead, they cultivate multiple candidates and cherry pick. I like how the ultimate remedy for Paul combines “Desert Spring tears” with “the hair of the dog.”

Alia is an interesting change from the book, they totally keep her for a third film, so in that way works in the books and in this film. Chani on the other hand is better in the books and the changes they make for the film are unnatural, unnatural for her character as written and as a woman in general. But in the big picture, it won't matter because, for the third film, it is obvious that she will back to the role and behavior of the novels, otherwise it doesn't make any sense.

24:10 My understanding is that in the process to breed for the Kwisatz Haderach the Bene Gesserit created people who could catch glimpses of the future. And so they use those glimpses of the future to sculpt the legend of the Lisan al-Gaib. That and knowledge of the powers that the Kwisatz Haderach would have led them to create a fairly accurate set of prophecies. And that which they weren't sure enough about they left vague so that people like Stillgar would interpret it as being true. I've given this example before imagine you don't know anything about jugglers and I come to you and say there's going to be a man who will arrive that can keep multiple balls in the air at the same time. And later I hire a juggler and he shows up. The prophecy is true. Because I made it happen. That and a few lucky coincidences of which they are always a few makes the prophecy seem very real. But it was all made up to suit a purpose. the Bene Gesserit designed it so that a member of their order could take control of Arrakis and thus have control over spice. 26:28 I'm glad Clariss caught on to the fact the following a fanatic might not be the best thing for you. The religion and its beliefs can be manipulated for others political gain. That's the true point of the book. Blindly following a charismatic leader can be bad for your health. 54:15 Faid being a precursor to the Kwisatz Haderach can also see the future to a certain degree. This clouds Paul's visions the two overlapping cancel each other out so the future is hidden from both of them. Paul has glimpsed it being the more powerful of the two but the future is still indeterminant for both of them. Thank you for saying Paul is not a hero his victory is not glorious for it leads to destruction. Clariss you get it. And now you guys have to wait A couple years for the next movie. I read Dune in 1975 or so So I'm going to pull out the world's smallest violin and play for you and your suffering. Because I've been waiting that long for this movie. A couple more years will seem like nothing to me.

They don't explore it in the movie but in the book Paul is not the Kwisatz Haderach, he is something else. As he puts it "something unexpected". The reason why the Reverend mother is so angry about Paul being male has nothing to do with his training in the Bene Gesserit, her anger comes from the lady Jessica not following orders and having a girl. The reason why she was supposed to have a girl was that she was to have been married to a Harkonnen heir preserving both bloodlines.

Great reaction video guys. After watching some other reaction videos, I’m always surprised how many people are rooting for Paul. There were a handful of reaction videos were the people got the meaning immediately. But for most the whole meaning of the story goes completely over their head or they like the idea of a white savior. It’s hard for people whose ancestors were colonizers to see Paul as anything other than a hero. The real hero and the stories, moral compass was Chani, who always stayed true to her people.

The Fremen and Stilgar also use Paul to get rid of the Harkonens. This story is not a simple good vs evil and is not only about colonialism bad, it also turns on his head that. Dune is attractive because is complex and grey. Paul is not a villain and is not a hero, is something else. And I think Dune has a lot to offer to our times, it reflects the mess we are at this time in our civilization, because of that Dune will grow even more during this decade, also kind of predicts things to come soon.

Paul isn't a hero but he's not a villian either. He was afraid to go south because of how fanitical and extreme the Freman are, and is able to minimize the damage they do to the great houses during the Holy War. Now his Son, Leto II who becomes God-Emperor, is more like a Thanos character who is playing the long game by oppressing all of humanity for thousands of years. This oppression follows the "Golden Path" by continuing the Bene Gesserit's selective breading program to product humans who can no longer be seen by his Omnipresence. This protects humanity from a future AI Omnipresence insuring humanity will never go extinct.

Another reaction where at the end someone is somehow talking about what the Dune books are supposed to be about, despite not having read them, and clearly relying on 3rd party interpretations by people who probably also didn't read... Clearly a smart person, but without a basic humility of realizing that their understanding is quite limited. Which incidentally would make for a fitting character in the Dune universe. Dune is far from being some kind of holy grail, but it's definitely a lot more nuanced in its themes than this reaction would imply.

Villeneuve really made epic with two movies that pretty much openly slapped Disney's entertainment giant across its face. I gotta love that. These movies had better visual effects, practical effects, story, acting what Disney has put on live action in past several years. And money has been well spend considering how amazing both films look. Most Disney's projects with similar or higher budget look like caricatures of films compared Dune films.

The shots and landscapes are gorgeous, the actors are all excellent, and Villeneuve did what a lot of people said couldn't be done, adapt the book to the screen in a way which honours the book yet makes a badass movie. My favourite scenes are when you see Jessica and Paul truly start to become next-level Bene Gesserit...basically kind of 'evil' almost like Sith (like Emperor Paplatine and Vader). The actors portrayed this very well in just how theylooked, spoke and acted and really started to control everyone around them.
