A predator is a predator. The Yautja "Yah-oot-cha" (the species of the creature) are basically game hunters. They increase their prestige and rank in the clan by the more dangerous prey they take as trophies. Men are considered a decent prize because they are very crafty and have killed more than a couple predators. There are, of course, more dangerous prey in the universe though. They have their own rules e.g. they don't kill pregnant creatures, unarmed opponents, sickly or unthreatening opponents, and things they consider unworthy. If they do, they're considered "Bad blood" and are hunted with impunity and those who kill bad bloods are given more prestige within the clan.

I like that they never reveal too much of the Predator in this movie. The less you know about a horrific monster, the scarier he becomes. At the same time, each tiny reveal only begs more questions about the Predator. The less answered, the greater the intrigue. Which is likely why this film has endured for so long as a cult classic all these decades later! Gotta keep the horror real. Modern takes on the Predator reveal too much and makes them seem not so scary. If you wanna make a newer film, reveal a tiny bit of its lore. But make it so that each reveal only begs more questions. The formula from this original classic was perfect. My opinion. -OG

I actually think that Predators is the only sequel that does the expansion of the lore in this way. For everything else that is revealed about the monsters in predators, two more questions arise. Former Recon Marine here: Mac making a big deal about how much noise Dillon was making is a total Hollywood thing. When you're in the middle of the wilderness, animals actually make quite a bit of noise. It's not unnatural to hear constant scurrying and branches breaking. Therefore you don't have to walk like a ninja, and frankly with THAT much ammo, weapons, and gear, you wouldn't be able to anyway. As long as you're not making excessive noise, you're good. If they really wanted to be stealthy, they would only move at nighttime and would keep a low profile during daytime (basic principle of Reconnaissance). Fun Fact: Blain's character was played by Jesse Ventura, a real life SEAL. Technically he only served as a UDT (Underwater Demolition Teams) member which were the precursor to SEALs that weren't disbanded until 1984. He never deployed on a SEAL team, but he was still trained in BUDs and land warfare and went to Vietnam as a UDT member. In the making of Predator they had to calm him down around so many "soft" actors. Him chewing tobacco is actually something that practically all of them would've been doing in a real specops unit lol. It's very much part of the "grunt" culture in any combat arms unit. 15:16 The Predators’ motivations are not overtly explained in any of the movies. In some of the books, we learn that their species, the Yautja, had been enslaved by another species thousands of years ago. The Yautja rose up and fought for their freedom. The hunts became part of their culture, partly as a way to maintain their strength and warrior spirit. No matter how technologically advanced they become, the Yautja will never become “soft” and will never again be enslaved.

Classic action-movie. :) The Predator was quite a formidable foe, but despite it's advanced equipment, one of them had a weakness that probably robbed it from more kills than it made: its camouflage. Many often call it invisibility-cloak, but the tech does not fully render them unspottable. It's called optic camouflage, which generally makes the user transparent by reflecting the surrounding area's image onto itself. This makes them somewhat easy to spot, specially when they move and even when standing still (if spectators look real closely, in the latter case), as opposed to being 100% invisible.

YES!!! GET TO DA CHOPPA!!! MY #1 FAVORITE ARNOLD SCHWARZENEGGER MOVIE!! Facts you didn't know about the movie: Jean Claude van Damme played the Predator in some parts of the movie, but quit production as he was tired of wearing the original suit which looked like a lizard insect hybrid. He even wanted to kickbox Arnold but the producers refused. Kevin Peter Hall, RIP, was cast as the titular character as he was more of an intimidating opponent for Arnold's character Dutch, 7'2". He even played the helicopter pilot at the end of the film when they rescue Dutch Fellow actor and bodybuilder, Sven Ole Thorson, a friend of Schwarzenegger's played the Russian officer who kills one of the hostages. Oscar Winning VFX company Stan Winston Studios designed the PREDATOR suit for the film and would later return to the franchise for PREDATOR 2 in 1990. Half the cast and crew got food poisoning except for Arnold and Director McTiernan whom ate Spaghetti O's and PBJ Sandwiches like Ford and Speilberg on Raiders Of The Lost Ark. Schwarzenegger would later hire his own personal Chef to give the actors the food they needed. No hot meals were allowed due to the heatwave in Mexico so they ate protein bars instead. The producers hired a bodyguard to protect people from Sonny Landham, RIP, whom played Billy, as he was prone to violent outbursts. Landham said in an interview that "We weren't making a movie, it was a survival story for all of us." It was 110° in the shade while it was 42° at night. It rained for 2 weeks making filming even more difficult. It was a box office success, making $100 million dollars ($360 million dollars today) against an $18 million dollar budget. It was nominated for Best Visual Effects but lost to InnerSpace. It's now considered to be one of the best Sci-fi Action movies ever made.

I'm not sure if someone has answered your question at 18:40 about how they did the Predator's blood, but if not: it's actually a practical effect - it's a mixture of KY Jelly and the liquid that's inside a green glowstick As an aside, the Predator was originally going to be played by a pre-fame Jean-Claude Van Damme and look MUCH different. You can find the original version online from when they did test shots, and it looks ABSOLUTELY RIDICULOUS. They sent the footage to the studio and were pretty much immediately told to shoot what they could without the Predator, redesign the thing and fill it with a much larger actor (the guy who played the final Predator was over 7' tall). The process of firing JCVD was apparently pretty acrimonious on both ends.

The scene where Dillion sees the Predator wasn't his camo shield glitching. As you pointed out The Predator was watching an listening to them and knew Dillion didn't believe he existed. So when he had the chance he turned off the shield briefly to show Dillion, no it isn't a couple of humans messing with you, it is a giant lizard.

Haven’t seen anyone say it yet but the “predators” blood is literally the fluorescent green glow stick gel inside glow sticks….they still use that as predator blood to this day…..they even have to have alot huge buckets of it cause it drys quickly and when it drys the glow goes away….so they have to constantly keep it on hand

Clariss Here's a summary of a backstory: After this movie plus its sequel and others created a fictional bio of the Predator. Bio Profile is that Predator is belong to an interstellar species named Yautja. Yautja species are warrior types that hunts for sport and honor for its people. Remembered the beginning of this movie, smaller ship left the mothership to Earth. Yautja Predator is going to hunt on Earth. As he gets down with his hunt, mothership would return. He flies back to mothership. So, it would return back their home world of Yautja Prime. As you continue on with Predator franchise, Clariss, you will understand of Yautja's tactics.

This is one of my favorite movies, and my best and I have discussed it a lot. We came up with a few ideas and theories that might make sense. See if you agree. 1) Why didn’t we ever see the other party of rebels? Because the Predator split his time between killing them and hunting Dutch’s team. 2) What was the Predator doing right behind Dutch before it triggered the net trap? Probably going to stab him right in the back. Another kill/trophy, and then his team would be demoralized/panicking. (The way it killed Mac shows that he’s not afraid to fight dirty.) 3) Interpreting the Predator’s line “What the hell are YOU.” Basically, at the end of the day, both he and Dutch are mass killers.

16:06 the predator uses a throwing dart/knife as he turns his head so we only see the blood splatter as it scratches his ear and misses. Some say there was a longer scene that was cut where it actually shows the knife itself. Then he is hit in the back and out through the chest from the Predator's plasma caster which is not a laser but uses an electromagnetic system to shoot 3000 C hot gas bursts over long distances.

I get what you mean about older movies taking place in jungle or wooded areas. Indiana Jones is a good example that comes to mind; all three movies despite being PG 13 rated adventure films with a guy who survives some of the most deadly thing's to where it's hilarious, the setting, imagery, color tones, lighting are very grounded and rough. It doesn't look bright and colorful, it's gritty that's the best word I can use to describe it. Then you look at Kingdom of the Crystal Skull; which was very much in line with the previous 3 movies honestly in terms of wacky escape artistry, but everything was vivid and bright, green screen, CG over reliance, it looked weird in comparison to the original movie's. The Jurassic World movies give me the same vibe, so bright and colorful even in darker night time settings. Also, when I was a kid and saw this and they said there were guerrillas in the area they had to watch out for, my dumb ass thought they were talking about actual gorillas, like on top of an alien stalking them in some godforsaken jungle they have to worry about gorillas too? Lol

They used the liquid from green glowsticks to make the Predator blood and because at the time the movie was filmed they didn't have fancy smanxy computer graphics or cgi the made the Predator Invisible by tampering with the cameras so that they could see and record red colored objects and have the Predator suit painted all red!

Billy tried to face his fear... Problem is - he convinced himself he will die regardless, so in this case, he simply decided to die like a man. That's the thing that many seem to miss for some reason... From Billy's point of view, it was either die running, or die fighting. Thus, man made his choice... and that's precisely why he earned respect of the Predator

The Predator's laugh at the end is his recording of Billy laughing at the dirty joke earlier. It's like a souped-up version. I think that's cool. He can't speak the language but he records voices and mimics them (or plays the sound) later. The dirty joke guy is Shane Black, who wrote 2018's "The Predator". In this film he was killed off early cuz the director needed him to work on the script as they were filming. If you want off-the-chart one-liners from Arnie, "Commando" is the creme de la creme of kill jokes. It's ridiculously over the top in every way. Maybe a good way to end your Arnie 80's viewing, if you want to see more.

"Predator" is a Schwarzenegger action classic directed by John McTiernan, director of "Die Hard", "Die Hard with a Vengeance", "The Hunt for Red October", "Medicine Man", "The Thomas Crown Affair" and "The 13th Warrior". The Predator species name is YAUTJA (YOWT-ja). They are interstellar sportsmen whose entire culture revolves around big game hunting. They test themselves against apex predators which often includes sentient beings like man. They have a code in that they do not kill the unarmed or the infirm as it is not challenging nor do they kill pregnant prey as a way of husbanding the livestock. If vanquished, they leave no trace of themselves behind by detonating a powerful bomb so as to leave the "preserve" pristine by not contaminating the indigenous culture with their technology. As a rite of passage, they must blood themselves by killing a xenomorph from the "Alien" series. If prey is worthy by offering good sport and defeating the hunter, the tribe will bestow the victor with a trophy. There's a pretty good Predator fan film on KZitem set in the Middle Ages with knights called "Predator: Dark Ages" starring Adrian Bouchet (Steapa) from "The Last Kingdom"! The movie is an alien variant of "The Most Dangerous Game", the Richard Connell short story from 1924 which has inspired countless man-hunting-man movies like "Hard Target", "The Naked Prey", "Race with the Devil", "Southern Comfort", "The Running Man", "Surviving the Game" and "Beyond the Reach". The Central American guerrillas were probably Communists receiving supply and support from Russian advisors explaining the Soviet presence. Billy faced off against the Predator alone because he would rather die fighting than running; it was a matter of honor. He drew first blood with his machete so that the Predator would not have the privilege. It's a Native American custom. Anna was unarmed and, therefore, spared. Wounded Poncho was killed because he had already been marked as a combatant and was still holding a weapon. The Predator released Dutch, took off its mask and fought him hand-to-hand because it considered Dutch to be worthwhile prey. The last laugh was the Predator's mimicry. It was using a recording of Billy's laughter at Hawkins' lewd joke to express a fatalistic defiance to Dutch. Three of the cast went into politics! Schwarzenegger became Governor of California, former wrestler Jesse "The Body" Ventura, who played heavy-gunner Blaine, became Governor of Minnesota and Sonny Landham, who played tracker Billy, ran for Governor of Kentucky. Jean Claude Van Damme was supposed to be the Predator originally but he had difficulty with the alien suit as initially designed and was considered too small in stature to be threatening! Special Effects maestro Stan Winston was tasked with redesigning the alien to fit the 7'2" Kevin Peter Hall. The dreds were inspired by a Rastafarian painting in producer Joel Silver's office and the mandibles were the contribution of a napkin sketch by director James Cameron who shared a flight and a brainstorming conversation with Winston by pure chance! Danny Glover stars in the underrated urban-set "Predator 2" in which a link between the Alien and Predator franchises appears! Dark Horse comics ran with the crossover concept inspiring Hollywood to make TWO crossover "AvP" films with moderately successful to excellent results. They're fun and exciting guilty pleasures with the second one, "AvP: REQUIEM", being particularly lean and mean. There is also a "PREDATORS" film produced by Robert Rodriguez that is definitely worth a look. "The Predator" (2018) REBOOT, however, should be avoided at all costs; it's a franchise-killer! The 18th-century set "PREY" is a prequel to the original film which was released on Hulu August 5. The Alien films have a RICHER SUBTEXT while the Predator films are more ACTION FARE but they're both fun sci-fi thrillers. Clariss, if you've never seen the SPECIAL EDITION of "Aliens" or the ASSEMBLY CUT of "Alien 3", then you absolutely should. Both films are recontextualized completely. The longer cuts for both films are preferred by the filmmakers themselves.
