For several models of Acura and Honda, there have been a small percentage of cars with immobilizer chip experienced faulty ignition key reader, which Honda called it as "Immobilizer Unit"
Many Honda/Acura dealer has no experience in fixing this issue, and quoting $2000 - $4000 to over repair (I was quote CAD$2.2k on Jan 2016 by North Toronto Acura dealer).
This video is to help the car owner to fix it themselves. This is a 15 min fix and you don't need to know much about car to fix it. Only a flat head and Phillips screw driver is sufficient to perform this job yourself.
This video will show you following info:
1. How the green immobilizer light looks like when you experience the problem?
2. Car is able to crank, but won't start
3. Where to buy the key reader
4. How to open the steering cover?
5. How to test it with replacement part without spending time to actually repair it?
6. How far the key needs to be away from the reader in order to sense the IC in the key?
Cars affected (gathered from various Honda & Acura forums):
1. Integra - compatible with 1st gen Honda Insight
2. RSX
3. Oddysey
4. TL
5. TSX
6. Accord
7. Civic
Part cost:
1. In US, USD$50
2. In Canada, CAD$120, from dealer only. Calls all the Honda/Acura dealer until you get this price. Most are selling CAD$150
Q: Can the circuit board be repaired?
A: Nobody in the forum repair the surface mount component repair, but it is highly possible due to crack solder, resistor, capacitor, or inductor. BMW diamond key has people showing exact components to replace due to their key worth USD$500, but not for Honda/Acura, since it only sell for USD$50 in State (other countries is more expansive)
Q: Can it be other issues?
A: If car able to start by entering the brake-by-pass code, then it is the key reader at key ignition. Otherwise, it will be other issue, such as low battery, blown fuse, wrong key, bad starter, faulty distributor, faulty fuel pump, faulty spark plug. It is very rare to be faulty ECU/PCM, if dealer is asking you to replace this CAD$2000 unit. Don't trust dealer/mechanic if they are charging you more than CAD$1000
You can buy Honda HDS from eBay and used it to test the immobilizer.
USD$110 - www.ebay.com/itm/NEW-2016-HOND...
USD$29 - www.ebay.com/itm/professional-...
Buying the HDS cable + mini CD (you need Windows XP 32-bit) is cheaper than dealer's diagnostic charge. Moreover, Honda HDS can re-program all keys/add keys, if it is not due to faulty immobolizer key sensor/sender
