Speedrunning D&D is like speedrunning Monopoly. Skill matters very little, just roll those dice and hope it works out in your favor.
One of my favorite games many years ago. I could never beat it, until I watched a speedrun. Now I see why very few people speedrun this game: RNG. Random encounters alone have many RNG factors: how often they occur, if the mob surprises you it's a guaranteed fight, angry mobs will fight unless you try to flee, and sometimes still catch you. Sometimes you can parley your way out of a fight, sometimes you can't. If you find or surprise monsters, you can wait and they'll run. Ohlo's necklace gives you a little leeway once you get it, as it has a few spare charges you can use on RNG encounters if necessary.
But this game is D&D, so randomness is the name of the game. Creating a useful 3rd character can happen in a single roll, or might take 50 rolls. Stats are random when leveling up. Landing a hit in combat can be rough, then the damage roll is also RNG. Even the necklace which guarantees AOE hits can randomly do half it's damage sometimes, failing to kill larger monsters such as ogres. You could buy the same healing service for each party member, and it will heal a different amount each time. Also my "Use Item" disappeared once during a run, so apparently menu options remaining functional is also RNG.
