Ad Reinhardt is an important American painter best known for his contributions to the Conceptual and Minimalist movements. His most famous works are his Black Paintings (1954 - 1967), which he considers an evolution of modernism and which he calls "the last paintings that it is possible to do". Inspired by Kazimir Malevich's Black Square (1914), his series contains subtle changes in tones and colors, bringing visual and conceptual complexity that can only be appreciated in person. A philosophical and rigorous artist, he declares "[that] As an artist, I would like to eliminate the symbolic side, because black is interesting not as a color but as a non-color and an absence of color". Born Adolph Frederick Reinhardt on December 24, 1913 in Buffalo, New York, he studied art and art history at Columbia University from which he graduated in 1935. Reinhardt died on August 30, 1967 At New York. His estate is represented by the New York gallery David Zwirner and his works appear in the collections of MoMA in New York, the Art Institute of Chicago, the Tate Gallery in London, the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis, among others. and the National Gallery of Art in Washington, DC
