Update: Adam got his wish and he will be fighting for the King of Pancrase Strawweight championship belt!
The best part about filming the same team for over a year is that I have so much footage of everyone.
I went down to shoot a little post-fight interview with Adam Antolin after his second Pancrase strawweight win and I was scheduled to shoot a few more spots with some other AKA folks. Due to mechanical problems with the trains and heavy rain, I almost didn't make it to HQ that day, but I was motivated to see some friends who were leaving town for the rest of the week.
I caught the tail end of Pro Team Sparring practice, while they were doing some light grappling in the Main (Red) Room. I never like to ask them to turn the music off (because I try not to interrupt practice or distract them from what they're working on), but most of the footage I shot has copyrighted music in the background and over some of the funniest dialogue.
Strawweight, Adam Antolin, and his fellow San José native teammate, flyweight, Anthony Do, have some of the slickest moves and best camaraderie of any pairs of brothers on the AKA HQ Pro MMA Team. It was so perfect that Anthony jumped in and started sparring and heckling Adam, but I didn't want to toss out the rest of the footage of Head Coach and Owner, Javier Méndez's, first day back after a long trip to Europe. I needed something to put over it and a whole bunch of canned music wasn't cutting it.
Thankfully, way back in August of 2018, a friend (from a major MMA promotion's film department) came up to shoot a documentary about me and I asked him to run camera for a piece on Anthony "The Antidote" Do. Unfortunately, he shot it out-of-focus, but the dialogue was good.
I filmed Ant Do training again in November 2018, for his own Pancrase debut, thinking I could run that newer training footage under his old interview and salvage the dialogue. That ended up not being possible, because of strategic reasons, Ant Do's team chose to not release any training footage from that fight camp, prior to the event.
In editing this one together, I used the dialogue from the blurry interview over the copyrighted music, but the dialogue ended up running over in length. Then, I added the training footage to the end and was finally happy with how it all turned out.
Working with a real, functional Professional Fight Team is never easy and you always have to adapt to ever-changing situations, but they are patient with me and I am with them and in the end, we have fun and do great work together. It's really an honor to get to be a part of this community and tell these stories. Don't think I ever take it for granted. Thank you!
Pro Team Practice was led by Coaches Javier Méndez, Crazy Bob Cook, Ron Keslar, Hector Fernández, Thomas Diagne, Clint Coronel, Shawn Bunch, and Rosendo Sanchez.
[Correction: Anthony Do is a Flyweight (125 lbs. limit) not a Strawweight (115 lbs. limit).]
