Here's a fresh perspective on Adam van Koeverden's 2004 Olympic gold medal performance in the K-1 500 m kayak finals. Living in England at the time, I had to wake up at 5:00 am to watch the finals where Adam van Koeverden had a good chance of winning a medal - hopefully gold for Canada. I recorded the event in case I didn't get up in time.
Since we know the outcome it may be hard to put yourself in my shoes at the time, but what I watched and what the announcers were saying was so different it was confusing: your eyes see a Canadian victory, but your ears hear that it isn't so - maybe it was the early hour, but for a while my brain was questioning if I actually saw what I thought I witnessed!
The video feed is the same for all viewers, and the standings and replay verifed that my eyes were correct, but the announcers still don't catch on - that's when it becomes truly amusing. Finally at about the 5 minute mark the announcers start to catch on that there is more than just the British guy in the race who finished 3rd: "They're saying van Koeverden has won the gold medal ... I'd like to see the replay..."
It ends up being an interesting perspective on the bias and focus of different announcers. In order not to offend anyone, I've blurred the logo in the top corner, but I can at least tell you that it wasn't the BBC.
