Great review Stewart, looking forward to seeing more shoots! I find that tilting the pod up a bit on a mini tripod like that can help counterbalance the arms, I couldn't live without those little tripods in my videos! Cheers - Ben

Why not redesign the mounting point so it's very near the front of the unit? Maybe also include inside a counterweight near the back of the unit.
@Adaptalux
5 жыл бұрын
Good question, the mounting point is where it is so that when the pod is mounted on a camera, it's not sticking out the back where one's head would usually go. We do have ideas in the works for future versions of the control pod that make all kinds of mounting a bit easier though.

Nice review Stewart, tbh the price is that of a premium product so quite surprising (& disappointing) that something like a proper stand isn't included, not to mention the shocking price I saw when you brought up the website! Still not convinced that a few small led panels like the Aputure AL-M9 & gels isn't as good.

Thanks for the review Stewart. I've just had a look at the Adaptalux website though and the prices are beyond belief - $70 for the 'Stabiliser' (which is just a basic stand), $35 for the 'Pro Mount' (which just looks like a 3D printed hot-shoe mount attached to a GoPro bracket). Also very surprised to see that they're using the old mini-USB connection type on the back of the head unit and that they've put the tripod mount at the back... though that could be a deliberate move to try and sell the Stabiliser. All in all I think they need to seriously rethink their pricing strategy.

I literally laughed when I saw the mini USB port. The last thing I bought that had mini USB was a PSP! I haven't owned a mini USB cord in years.... AND that's the 2.0 version? They're using old stock USBs they probably got cheap as hell and still charging over $200? Think I'll pass.

I have been testing my new Adaptalux macro lights the last few days and I am a big fan! The new control module works well by itself or via Bluetooth. With the diffusers (the lower value diffusers) I rarely go over 50% power. It does have a small learning curve but once you get it, they are great! I normally use 3 lights, one on each side of the bug and one above. I take a test shot and if I have an specular hightlights ( hot spots) I just turn that light down 10% until it goes away. What is REALLY nice from a sharpness perspective is that f7 at a relatively slow shudder speed and low ISO gives me virtually NO noise shots. I figure I can always increase exposure in post where I need it! They are by FAR the best lighting solution I have used for my indoors/macro lab setup. But they really are not much more expensive that a few flashers or some LED lights which can be hard to position. The bendy arms really make a difference and the lights can be adjusted for a wide beam or tight circle. I’m very pleased with the setup!

Good video, Stewart. As I've just struggled with getting good lighting on some Roman Coins I was trying to photograph, I went looking for some tips on macro photography and your video came up. I'm tempted (once I get some more experience under my belt) to buy it. I particularly liked the outtakes. You might consider doing a "hey these are outtakes " note so we know what we're in for!

I have experimented with UV flashlights but holding one in my mouth, one in my hand and then setting off the remote and throwing it to the ground is a hysterical pain in the butt! I can see the benefit of the system. Having such controlled lighting in a macro environment is very cool. I completely agree it's for more advanced shooting and priced accordingly. I currently stumble through setups with random lights and would love an all in one package. If I were making money with photography, I would invest in it. To put it in perspective, how much is invested in photo and video studio lighting? You add what you need to achieve the look you want. A longer arm or extension would be sweet but would add to the off balance issue. They should add a better balanced tripod mounting point.

Great reviews on the adaptalux, I bought the studio with a couple of white arms and the UV before seeing the review, personally I didn't think the price off putting, although the extras are a bit much as mentioned by a few the stabilizer is insanely expensive... I've discovered as you, that it is off balanced but looking at a Takeaway T1 or similar good and low hopefully shift the centre of gravity ... A waterproof thread arrangement should be a simple fix and a series of bungs for the controller isn't beyond Adaptalux as a development

Got a Starter Kit recently (delivered to the U.S.) and one of the arms was defective. I discovered that Adaptalux's stated policy on returns is that the customer pays return shipping, even for a defective item. In all fairness, this is clearly laid out on their website. But it's still a very off-putting added expense. Buyer beware.

What would you suggest in place of this for a reasonable price? I'm trying to find something but new to the hobby. Having said that I hope you don't mind me asking this as it's not really related to the video but still macro. I have trying to take an image of a bubble but I wasn't getting any colour, I was just seeing a clear bubble or a blown out one. Using a speedlite with diffuse. Using soap and some sugar.

Great video Stewart. I really like the look of this system but the price is a no no for me, especially during the current climate. I also think that some of the prices are far too high, over £60 for the stand for example. I'll keep my eye out for something a bit cheaper! Subscribed :)

As a maker, with heavy experience in lighting and LEDs, I can tell you that you could build something very similar for WAY cheaper. $265 for the controller and 2 LED arms? $600 for the full kit? Yeah, no, I think I'll go ahead and order an arduino, some XLR connectors, a project box, and some LEDs with lenses.

Do you still use it? Would you still recommend it? They now have a Kickstarter on for a minopod that fits a single arm and it does look kinda interesting to me, would love some real-world opinions! Also on how good their flash-arms are, if you have any experience with those! Thanks in advance for any replies! 😊

Hey Chaz, high CRI LEDs like the ones we use are not as cheap to procure as you might think and they really can't be compared to the LEDs you find around in other applications or around the home. When it comes to using LEDs for photography, CRI is super important for accurate and vibrant colours in your images.
