I actually drove a L322 Range Rover for the first time yesterday (a 2005 Vogue Td6 with the BMW 3.0L Diesel) after replacing the gearbox for a neighbour - he was quoted £3,500 by a garage, which is silly - and I have to say they really are something special. I can totally see why you went back to one after a L663 Defender. It just feels so much more solid and better built, almost Germanic. The Defender I felt was an utter disappointment interior-wise, and the Discovery 3 just feels like a Ford Mondeo. I've also discovered that a Range Rover is far easier to work on than a Discovery 3!

Glad you got to drive one in the end, Cameron! I thought you’d be impressed - the later models are even better than the earlier ones! All things considered, the L322 is the best of the bunch, I think. There have clearly been some improvements in tech and strength with the defender’s X platform, but they are not elsewhere as good. I’ve given a comparison video earlier on, but the two vehicles differ really only in terms of tech and some increase in off road ability due to different design parameters - and even in some of those tech improvements there have been issues (the high beam assist for instance, is far worse in the new defender than the rangy). JLR peaked with the L322, and really a later tech model with slightly better suspension would give the new defender a run for its money!

@@shedlock2000 It depends what you define as luxury. If it's just gadgets, then sure buy a brand new Range Rover with all of the toys, but to me it's the whole experience, and this 2005 model really did feel special. It's a shame that it wasn't dark blue or green with a beige interior!

The green on tan that was an option post 2010 is my favourite pairing, but it’s very rare here - I’d say 80% are black on black (or black on something) here. Having driven many, I enjoy the BMW V8 a lot, but there’s a refinement that domed with the 2020 onwards that’s missing from the earlier years. I also like the more composed drive offered by the adaptive suspension, and appreciate the better fit and finish of the later dash. But they’re all good!

How many kms on your friends? I am still considering picking one up now that prices have started to come back to earth but the ownership experience does scare me a bit.

Hers has less than mine - I think only 90,000km or so. I’ve never really had many issues (in comparison with other vehicles) with mina, so the ownership experience has been much better than with other marques!

I was told not to cut as it needs some slack due to the turrets turning in use

The turrets shouldn’t turn at all, else the whole thing would tie itself into a knot! I’m not sure I would agree with your advice, as the original was only as long as it was and hadn’t caused any such issue in the previous 10 years! Interesting perspectives though!

@shedlock2000 the damper block that bolts on over the connector turns with the steering so the wires get stretched if they're not ling enough..that's probably what causes the issue in the first place.
