Like most of us, I lusted for a PVM or BVM. Still don't have one, but I think i can move on knowing this mod actually works. I do have a 27" Sony Trinitron tube TV and well, now I just might mod that. Modding this 13" TV was was increasingly difficult because this TV was 1) small, making the PCB cramped, and; 2) newer making the PCB full of surface mount crap and also lacking a service manual. Fun fact. I paid $30 for this beauty NEW when I was working at K-mart in ~2005. I worked in the electronics dept. It was a wild ride.

You did this one the hard way, which is great for more obscure set like yours, I have done a few that way too, using photoshop to trace the PCB, but RGB modding has never been easier as there is a lot more info available these days, with your specific Sony model chances are a mod (if doable) has already been documented. shmups forum and CRT collective on fb have a lot of set specific RGB mod info. Also look out for JVC D-series, they are amazing and great mod candidates as well

Oh man I just forked out for some from Japan, one is a more recent 14 inch 100v-240v so I won’t need a step down converter.. the other is 1992 14 inch model and needs a step down (240v here in aus) and then a small one simply because it was $15 ...this was all good until I got the postage quotes !! Still no more than I’d have paid for them here .... they better have language select in the OSD!!

Awesome video. It would've been cool to see how the dithering on the waterfall in Green Hill Zone compares between composite and RGB on this TV. The waterfall is said to actually look better in composite as the dithering was designed to take advantage of the poorer quality of composite or RF.

These mods are insanely hard, i also attempted it some years ago and i gave up halfway through when i had to make my own amplifier circuits and what not. It would be awesome if you could RGB mod some popular TV models like the Wega/Trinitron, etc, they all probably share a lot of common parts like the Jungle ICs, then it would be way easier to get one of these models and just follow your instructions.

I’ve had better luck using the RGB out, or tracing them with a meter. I have done 3 successful ones in a row now. I did a sharp the other day, pinouts showed OSD R/G/B and blanking. I could only get the RGB through the OSD text using these pins. Blanking just killed the screen. I moved RGB across to the RGB outputs (which you have as Pin 19/20/21) and voila , RGB with sync on the channel I tapped the composite on for sync ... only need to switch blanking when using composite over sync... otherwise with C sync it worked without blanking. I do prefer to switch blanking even on C sync as it does change the colour tones VERY slightly ... Each TV has being slightly different. The Hitachi with Phillips main chip I needed to trace RGB tracks until I was basically sending the signals direct into the neck board. Same thing where blanking was only needed for composite over sync. And also a trinitron flat screen. I have an LG and Samsung and older model small trinitron to do eventually

Ryan great video!. I have the same idea as you. I am building a Neo Geo MVS sort of clone but with a 32" Sony Trinitron KV 32S22, my mother donate it. I have all the schematics, all the rgb lines that go into the jungle chip identified. The thing is that I want to put an original 2 slot mvs board inside of it.. so I might need a supergun right? To output either RGB component or Scart connection , I see those superguns have controller (gamepad type) inputs on the front, like for Sega Saturn and such which I don't need and they block the harness entry for arcade buttons wiring. Do you know of any dedicated video procesing board for MVS that leaves the arcade harness connections free and that will let me hook this thing to my Trinitron once I mod it?. Also what route do you recommend component or Scart
@RetroBuiltGames
4 жыл бұрын
A supergun will get you off the ground faster, but it's not necessary. The MVS 2-slot outputs RBG, so i'd stick to this signal type. You really need a power supply for the MVS board. A super gun does this, or a modified ATX psu will do it too; you need 5v 12V, and -12V (for some amps). A JAMMA harness will break out everything you need from here.
