This is the simplest and accurate description of ACEs workflow I have come across. Otherwise, lot of web pages, and videos either oversimplify, or overcomplicate the explanation. Thanks for putting in the effort to educate VFX artists.

This video single handedly sent me on a long and arduous journey through new software and pipeline development to now creating renders indistinguishable from plate footage every time. My work as a VFX artist took a huge pivoting upward push in quality the day I watched this video, and I really don’t think I would have gotten where I am today without it . Every once in a while I come back to this video just for the entertainment and nostalgia, cause this dude is so freaking good at the pacing, sound design, and most obviously, graphics. Bro, whoever ur magical ahh is, u be doing more favors for fellow indie and professional VFX artists than the amount of times I would say the word “the” in my lifetime. Truly, thank you on behalf of myself and all those who didn’t take the time to comment/like/subscribe/patreon. U a god, never forget that. Also where’ve u been since Layers vs Nodes? Also also, u seem to have come across tools like nuke at about the same time I did, probably cause u watched this video too lol.

Nice video explaining what ACES does for color. Now the workflow is another thing :). dunno if cinema4D made it easier in lasts versions but the issue is you need to tell the program for every texture or video you import what kind of footage it is. Working linear is easier that way.
@InLightVFX
17 күн бұрын
When you say "working linear", this means working in a color space with linear calculations. Your default Cinema4D color configuration would have you working in a "linear color space" but so would the ACES configuration. Every texture or video you use inside of Cinema4D is going to have the color space converted in some way, no matter whether you're using the default color configuration or ACES. But I imagine Cinema4D has built in the functionaity to make these conversions automatically with their default color configuration, whereas with ACES it can be a more manual process as you say. I know people have made plugins for Blender to make this process more automatic. Perhaps there is something similar for Cinema4D?

I spent the last year or two learning ACES in depth (as a Nuke compositor), so the only thing I have against this video is that it didn't come out sooner. Linear workflow + gamma is fundamental compositing knowledge, but a shocking number of compositors have no idea what gamut is (me included 2 years ago). We'd just get "linear" plates, merge our CG over, and grade the shit out of it till it looks good.
@InLightVFX

Hey Peter, there is certainly a massive time committment needed to fully understand all of it! I'm hoping this video helps reduce that learning curve for some people as these are certainly fundamental, yet challenging, concepts to understand. Thanks for checking it out!

Fantastic video. But one thing had me a bit confused. You said "log footage leads to smaller file sizes than raw" which is like saying "Rec709 has a smaller file size than jpg". Those are 2 completely different things. One is a color space and the other is a file format. I don't know if the log color space affects the file size on an H. 264 coded file but raw footage generally contains the information to work in a log format. But I learnt some new things about linear and non linear gamma/light. Great work!
@InLightVFX
3 ай бұрын
Hi Jason. If you have a camera and record a file with a log color space and then record the same length file in RAW, you are generally going to get a smaller file with the log color space, no? This is a serious question as this is how it is intuitively in my brain but I just want to make sure I'm right about that. I think that's just what I meant by that phrasing. Thanks for watching!

Ahh don't say that! You can do it. The conversion to ACES really does a lot of the heavy lifting in transforming the RAW footage to look nice. See part 2 of the tutorial to see how this works: kzitem.info/news/bejne/ramprqx6fH9oe2k

I`ve got some budget DSLR`s, no LOG and RAW, is ACES any help here or is my Gamma doomed? lol
@InLightVFX
3 жыл бұрын
Haha you are not doomed but ACES might be less practical for you. Here is some advice copy and pasted from another comment by Mario: If you have the will for it you can actually turn display-referred DSLR footage into scene-referred linear footage. It's very difficult, time consuming, and not completely accurate but I actually do use this method as I also don't have a camera with a proper IDT. I don't blame him. Besides having a bunch of softwares in your arsenal is always beneficial. Blender is good at a lot of things but it sucks at some things like simulations, which is why many artists prefer Houdini. Even when it comes to compositing, blender is good but Nuke and Fusion (comes with da vinci resolve now) are really the best because they offer a better toolset. So I'll encourage you to mess around with Houdini, Nuke and Resolve and don't worry, both Houdini and Nuke offer a non-commercial version and Resolve is free.
