I was bitten by an Adder just about 6 weeks before the school year was out for summer 1977. I was allergic to the poison and the antidote. Many people came together to save my life and I will always be indept to them, especially the police who drove 90+ miles an hour so I was told to get the antidote to the hospital I was in. Also, flown in by helicopter from Guys hospital in London. I’m American by the way, thank you 😊

I am a Yank and I have never visited the UK but I became knowledgeable of adders through the Thomas Hardy novel Return Of The Native . It was required reading in my English class in high school . I live in Florida and the adder reminds me of the Pigmy Rattlesnake . As far as I know no one has ever died from the bite of a Pigmy but Pygmies have been known to bite when encroached upon or handled .

@@WildYourGardenWithJoelAshton I use to study a colony of adders in the New Forest, and following a discussion with a late friend was determined to see when these creatures emerged from hibernation. My colony comprised of about thirty individuals. So one bright morning in March I went to the spot, placed a digital thermometer into the frosted hollow of purple moor grass (Molinia caerulea) they used (south facing) ,and wandered away for thirty minutes. On my return I found a very dark (not totally black) male stretched out 'underneath' the thermometer, on which the temperature was noted as minus 6f! The frost only melted when the sun finally got into the hollow over an hour later. I did nudge the snake when first seen. It did just about move, but it was if it was velcroed! I have seen them in sheltered spots on the snow, but did not take the temperature on those occasions. Wonderful creatures!!!!

Out of the three native species over here, this is the most common, or at least the most commonly known since the other two aren't venomous. In year 9 the whole class went for a walk and had just sat down for lunch beside a small pond with an abandoned barn adjacent. As some friends and I were exploring the ruins we heard some commotion from where most the students were sat, evolving into frantic screeching and an orderly retreat from at least a dozen fairly small specimens which had emerged curiously from seemingly thin air to check us out.

In Sweden we have a lot of adders too.. they are very widespread and occupy many different environments throughout their huge range.. venom also differs in composition. In Hungary they have a neurotoxic component that is missing here in Scandinavia. Over here it's mostly hemotoxic and cytotoxic.. they are actually more toxic than many people believe. But the yield is small

They are hard to spot as very shy and scuttle off when they sense you. They are not aggressive at all and nearly all the bite reports at my local wildlife park have been on off lead dogs which poked their nose into one with only one human who stupidly tried to pick up the snake and move it off a path. I am trusted enough to be told by the ranger the best spot to see them. It took a while but eventully saw one down here in Kent. You need to creep up slowly, wind toward you and give snake distance. As soon as they sense you they disappear into the undergrowth. No idea why people would want to harm this fascinating snake.

Greetings from California! These are truly magnificent snakes. You must have had extremely powerful lenses to get the shot w here you started with a close view of the adder, and then pulled back to show the entire landscape. On an unrelated note, it’s fascinating to see plants like purple loosestrife in its native habitat. In the Eastern US, this beautiful plant is a terrible pest, completely overtaking wetlands. Likewise, Buddleia is a massive invader in the Pacific Northwest. I think that people from Japan might be surprised to learn what a problem their knotweed is in the UK.

I have been very curious about these animals. When people think of venomous snakes every other continent except Antarctica tends to overshadow Europe. Reasonably, I suppose, every other continent has far more deadly serpents. I had to search for venomous European snakes though because I just realized I had no idea about them and even then information is a bit sparse. I still have no clue about venom potency. Most sources just say "it isn't dangerous" and that isn't especially helpful. I suppose that means that you could possibly walk it off without treatment? What would be the consequences of that? I am American and you could do that with a copperhead bite too, but I would STRONGLY recommend against it because there are all sorts of things that could go wrong. Firstly some fool mistaking a cottonmouth for a copperhead (I've seen them do it), but even if it is a copperhead then it could cause permanent damage if not treated and frankly just because some people could walk it off doesn't mean you could. It seems like a really good way to flirt with death. When they say "it isn't dangerous" I think about a bee sting, not a snake bite. It is just hard for me to wrap my head around. Perhaps because of the area I live in, where I have actually stumbled across a rattlesnake, to me it is such an incredibly baffling thing to say about any viper. The comments might explain a little bit- so many say they have never even seen one. Still, finding information about the only venomous snake in the UK shouldn't be this hard given the population and historical relevance it has played on top of sharing a language FFS

@WildYourGardenWithJoelAshton

Hi there Ed - apparently it would be exceedingly rare to die from an adder bite, as with most snakes they will bite from fear or in defence, and most (there are only around 50-100 recorded bites across the UK per year) can cause pain, and medical treatment should be sought incase there is an adverse reaction - bites are usually from people trying to pick them up and most are on the arms, but they reckon out of millions of visits to the countryside every year a maximum of 100 bites are recorded. I certainly wouldn't walk bare-legged in an area likely to have adders just incase I inadvertently scared one. The Western Diamondback though... not sure I'd wear anything less than chainmail ;) Best wishes to you Ed :) Joel

Adders can have a bite than can kill, but apparently not many people have died from their bite since the 19th century, maybe 14 recorded. It can be nasty like a sting of a bee or wasp. The Black Adder unlike other adders have good eyesight and can strike like lightening and move fast. Most likely in hot days they might seem docile. But best to stay clear they will usually notice you before you spot them. I would be careful not to turn my back on one or step over one as I did once on a footpath. I felt nothing at the time but, later saw I was bitten on the back of my leg two red blood spots still bleeding. In the evening the pain was agony. When I tried to walk on the M62 motor-way as traffic was stopped for ages due to tanker truck was on fire, my leg was numb, and was not able to walk on it. An American came to our car to ask why the traffic jam? That was why I got out to talk with him. Most likely Cumbria, has many Adders that enjoy warm boggy areas. And, certainly coastal areas in south and north Wales marshes. Just recently I was doing my neighbours gardens for them. They are both sides of my home, I was cutting long grass and weeds, and getting rid of rubbish. I felt a nasty sting back of my leg thinking maybe it was a thistle; Afterwards, I felt exactly the same agony as I did when I was bitten some years ago by an adder. But this time, I never saw any snake in either garden. I was not able to walk for about a week. I felt itching in the back of my leg the night before last, and took a picture. I saw two tiny blood red holes. That was why i came here. A clue to being bitten and poisoned by an adder is that the pain tends to spread (in my case from my leg all the way up to my hip). It has cleared up pretty well today. I wonder how many people have been bitten over the years and not known what has caused it? When I lived in Wales I saw a number of snakes, On one occasion there was an all black one in our back garden. It looked slow like a slow worm, but fat and long like an adder. My brother went to pick it up, to move it out the garden, Wow did it move fast. Made both of us jump back. First black one I saw was about age 3. We lived about two miles from a beautiful waterfall you can see on my website; www.shimro.co.uk I have not updated it in 10 years or more.

Hi Barry - am assuming it's the second set of music towards the end - but I'm up in Yorkshire at the moment undertaking meadow cuts etc - will be back in a week and I'll look on the editing software for the piece of music and let you know :) Best wishes - Joel
