Hi, I've only just come across your channel, I know I'm late to the show! Just watched this and the last video were you take the cockpit to pieces, I hope you remember where it all goes back too. The motion base you've built appears to sit higher than the original static base, is this going to cause an issue with the clearance beween the top of the cockpit and the room ceiling. I'm just curious? It's a brilliant cockpit, and I was amazed watching the last video that you made everything, that truely is outstanding. I'm guessing it would be a silly question to ask why you have a kitchen in the sim room? Anyway going to look forward to seeing how this motion system works when it's all back together. All the best Dave.
@B738DIY
8 ай бұрын
I'm happy you enjoy my "crazy" project :) Hopefully it goes together again without to much trouble. I guess knowing every wire and all the design choices helps alot when putting it back together. Regarding clearance to the roof; you are absolutely correct in questioning if there is enough space. In the CAD model there is space, however it will be very close to the roof when full pitch down. The universal joint is positioned towards the rear of the cockpit reducing the movement of the aft of the cockpit compared to the front. You are not the first one to ask about the kitchen. The cockpit "lives" in what used to be a small apartment in the basement of our house. Something that is quite normal in Norwegian houses. (small apartments, not cockpits)

Adding a dummy yaw actuator (i.e. a bar that is positioned where the yaw actuator would go) will significantly improve torsional rigidity. And you need the yaw actuator mounts anyway, don't you?
@B738DIY
8 ай бұрын
The current setup is not able to move around the yaw axis. The universal joint only allow for pitch and roll (if it were rigid enough). Allowing for yaw (by letting the universal joint rotate) would however require a yaw actuator. But then the kinematics of the current setup with fixed linear actuator in the front would become very challenging to handle. The allowed yaw rotation would also be very limited with my current design

It is becoming expencive with every feature I'm adding :) If only looking on the cost of a 737 simulator, it really depends on your approach to building/accuiring one. There is a very good article onwww.simobsession.com/faq/how-much-does-it-cost/ which goes through cost. I my case, I have built everything my self except the throttle quadrant, which means that cost for some parts are less then if you were to purchase it. This does however require a lot more time and tools. Still there are a lot of expensive parts and tools that go into a diy build. I would say that you would need 10,000-30,000$ for a nice diy build, and up to an additional zero for a plug and play solution.

@B738DIY

Thank you! The weight of the simulator with two pilots is approximately 500 kg. Most of that weight is resting on the universal joint. I believe the limiting factor for how heavy the sim with my 3D printed U-joints is the moment on the universal joint when the base in at the max roll position. My calculation estimates a torque of 500 Nm. The maximum weight in the universal joint can hold up is significantly higher than 500 kg, so it is possible to use a heavier simulator is the center of mass is close to the pivot point. Your sim is really impressive by the way!

@B738DIY
8 ай бұрын
Thank you! I'm using PETG. Amount of perimeters and infill really depends on the load the part will see. If it is only compression, 3D printed parts can take significant loads. For the parts in the actuators I believe I use a 0.4 mm nozzle, between 6-10 perimeters. For infill I'm using a triangular pattern with between 20-30% infill and a line multiplier of 3. This is in Cura.

So far my experience with PETG is that it works well for these type of applications compared to PLA which will creep and fracture under sustained loads well below ultimate material stength. Im not blaming the material for the wobbel in the main universal joint yet, as I believe it is a design error. My main focus was the strength in the "z" direction, forgetting that the bearing would also take significant torsional loads. I have also found how the part deform which I will try to show in the next video.
