I usually only use samples for the snare and kick. The toms I leave as real drums. I also rarely do a 100% replacement. It varies from song to song, and it depends on how well the drums were recorded. Sometimes I'm just using 20% sampled drums and 80% real. Sometimes it's reversed. And everything in between. I agree that it makes sense to leave more of the live snare in than the kick. I feel like a 100% sampled snare will sound more obviously fake. Besides, I consider the snare drum more important to the overall mix. For the kind of music I do, anyway. So I really want to get it right.

Yeah man the feeling of the live kick is awesome! I always use some sort of samples, but blending can be real challenge. Cool tips! Nice video.

Would love to see a video like this where all you have midi + sampled drums when you aren't able to record live drums. I use superior drummer 3 recorded from an electronic kit and try my best to make them sound as good and realistic as possible. Feel like there is a completely different strategy involved to make that work.

I use Steven slate trigger in almost all my mixes. Really liking the get good drums sample pack lately because it came with one shots lol

I use to layer acoustic and pop drums sometimes,not on all drum parts but mainly the snare and kick, it's so good if done correctly

Hi mam thank you for this amazing video, my question is how should the balance be between the live snare and the sample snare? Do you make the sample louder than the original snare or you make 50.50 between them
@joeymusic

Depends. Experiment with it. Sometimes you might want the sample louder or sometimes softer. Totally depends on the song and the source sounds.

So you're not processing the real drums separately? You leave the real raw track as it is and process it on the same channel as your sample?

hi miami! thanks for the video! i can’t help but notice that there was a huge increase in the overall volume of each drum compared to the original drums once you introduced the sample. I was wondering, is there a reason that you don’t get the original drum to the level want it before adding the sample? or do you do it this way on a case by case basis? really enjoy the content dude, thanks a lot!

Adding samples makes things louder, and that's actually one of the desired effects (at least for me! and I've mixed a few thousand songs!) - Joey

trying to time align each sample hits with the real thing is a PITA especially if the drums aren't properly edited lol.

I hate mixing or layering drum samples Cause the hardest thing is finding the right sample lol. Seriously it's harder that making the best of your raw drums lol I'd rather replacing all the shells with samples or recording the live drum samples when recording to fix the dynamics

If I need to add samples to your drums, they're just getting fully replaced. Adding dynamics to midi is quicker than making sure phase and alignment is always good.

The comparison at the end would be better if they were gain matched a little more (obviously, I know the edited drums sound better). Also, people who actually have babies would never call drum samples their babies lmfao.
