This is nice. I'm wondering if there's a way where we can immediately populate the row *if* nobody else has it locked, rather than having to wait for the trigger to fire on the minute. But do permissions issues arise here? Mrs. Y can add a row now - is that because now updateDataLogTrigger() is populating the row (which belongs to you), not her?

The creator of the trigger, a you have said, will be the authority who populates that range. If all editors on the sheet can edit all cells in the range to append then there is no need for this added complexity and you can use the appendRow() directly. kzitem.info/news/bejne/wnqe2qOHbIKmo6Q If some users can edit the rows while others have been protected from the sheet, you could use a try-catch statement to on try attempt to simply appendRow() straight away and if this throws an error run the trigger. I hope this answers your question.

is there a way to not have the function updateDataLogTrigger time triggered but to execute automatically on each submit of new form entry?

Yes, you can a) give edit permissions to the sheet to append or b) create a service account to act as the user (A complicated process)
