I don't know whether or not AJ has drug problems, but he's definitely demonstrated character issues and a lack of impulse control. Pure wrestling talent is not enough to give him success in life... and it's a real shame that he isn't getting the hard character coaching that he needs. He's actually a good candidate for professional wrestling if he's willing to play a heel role for the long term. But it's sad to see the AJ tragedy play out in such a public way.

Love Desanto. Antics and all. As long as he’s not intentionally trying to hurt anyone. I always looked at his relationship with Suriano as a gauge for how I felt about Austin. For all the crap they’ve been through, Nick always spoke highly of and respected Austin’s competitiveness. If Suriano can see past the head case aspect, I can too. Micic may have another perspective tho. lol

Some guys need the Iowa style of coaching and some guys will do better with the Penn State style. Both programs develop high quality competitors and this KZitem clip focused on how Iowa helped Austin develop in areas that Penn State probably would not be able to address. Wrestlers in both programs are at the elite level and will need individualized coaching to reach their highest potential. I wouldn't say either of these programs is better than the other, even though the final team scores might indicate otherwise. The important decision each emerging elite high school wrestler has to make is which D1 program is the best fit to help them meet their individual lifetime goals. Iowa and Penn State both have world class coaches who can help a wrestler advance in their quest to win an Olympic gold metal. And so do a lot of other top level programs. For Austin Desanto, I think he landed in the perfect program that could develop him to reach his absolute highest potential.
