Protect children. Period. It's sickening the amount of things that happen to innocent children because of how unprotected and innocent they are. Just heartbreaking.

Ryan, I just wanna say thank you. I used freeze your brain for my audition song for Percy Jackson the lightning thief musical. And I got Percy, so without you I wouldn’t have gotten back into musicals and singing.

I am so sorry that this happened to you at such a young age. I was also groomed at age 11, and it is such a terrible experience. I will say, I am a 13 year old who has just started professional opera/musical theater (paid work). At least for the production I'm in right now, there are 20 kids from 8-15 years old. We have 2-4 child minders with us at all times, and there are always many members of the creative team in all rooms with closed doors. Parents are allowed at rehearsals, but not always in the rooms themselves. I think my mom is very aware of the grooming/SA in the industry given that I had family on broadway as kids. She makes sure to really check in with me after every rehearsal, and I feel very comfortable at work. Steps are being taken in the right direction, but we are obviously not there yet.

2 Things: #1: parents should always be there just like the director is. It doesn’t matter how much one trusts the producer or director, entertainment is sadly a highly possible dangerous job for children. #2:What do you think is the next best step after HS? I’m planing on NYU Tisch but if not that, what do you recommend? What did you do? ALSO can you make a video about how you made it INTO the industry please? It’s intriguing

Every time I hear you talk about negative fan interactions, I get reminded of how awkwardly I acted when I may have passed you on the street in Manhattan a couple of months ago 😭 I totally stared with fish mouth because I’m stupidly near sighted and could not for the life of me tell if it was actually you. Factor in that the guy had sunglasses on, was talking on the phone, and I was with family that were in a hurry to get somewhere, and all I could think to do was turn to my sister and ask “was that Ryan McCartan?” while he was absolutely still in ear shot. I really hope it wasn’t you because I’ve felt so bad about it ever since!

Alyson Stoner has a great podcast addressing the specific trauma of being a child star in Hollywood! They’re very articulate and break down each episode into its own subject (body image, privacy, mental disorders, etc.) and pose very engaging questions with the viewer. Even more impressive is they even proposed a detailed intervention plan FOR HOLLYWOOD PRODUCERS AND DIRECTORS at the season finale.

Children in hollywood is probably one of the most dangerous things to happen to someone but also maybe one of the best. Personally, being in the dance industry since i was 12 i first hand have seen and experienced grooming and obsession towards children. I have seen children with SEVERE burn out and mental health problems with their parents doing nothing because they don’t know what goes on in those rehearsals.

Thank you for being so honest about everything! I’m someone that has acted from a young age and plans to continue into a possible career, and while of course some stories are hard to hear, people absolutely need to know what they could encounter. The uncomfortable conversations are often the most important.

This video is entertaining (unfortunately) and informative about the work environments you can look out for. I hope we can have part 2,3,4 at a later date. Thank you for sharing your experiences, and giving people something to think about, and how to protect themselves. Advocating for yourself in a power dynamic is difficult and it shouldn't lead to someone being let go or threatened, or worse.

*Question:* if you were reading a fictional book about a character that was auditioning for a Broadway show and that was how the book opened (the process of going through that) what would you say is the most important elements to include/skim over?

You hit the nail on the head when you about power. That’s why I don’t see this as a Holllywood problem, but that the performing arts environment is one among many that is more conducive to harm. As a survivor was quoted in the movie Spotlight, “how do you say no to God?”, or the hundreds of elite gymnasts who were groomed to believe that Larry Nasser was “the nicest one”.

I always love and appreciate your transparency. I feel like people don't want to speak on it because they are so scared of having their career stalled or blacklisted. I'm trying to be an actor so this is all really helpful information. I can understand people being scared to come to you and say hi but if someone just barked an order that is so horrible. People really forget that celebrities or some who have fame are still people which is really sad to think about. Your hair is also on point. Ryan, you are the kind of person I can see me having lunch with and I'm just like tell me everything. Tell me all the stories good and bad. I could listen to you for hours. Keep doing what you are doing. It is important things are said for anything to change.
