Adjusting Koni Shocks
Today we're going to be talking about the adjustment of Koni shocks for both Alfa Romeo and Fiat.
We have in front of us the Koni sport for the Fiat Spider 124 series, it's the only Koni available currently for that series; the Koni classic for the front of the Alfa Romeo Spider/GTV, and a sport version of the same shock for Alfa Romeo.
Two different adjustment mechanisms were used on Koni shock absorbers. These are interchangeable so you may find either from one application to the other. The first method is a simple collapse of the shock absorber to engage the adjuster. On the second design, you have to extend the shock absorber, remove a spacer, collapse it, adjust it to your liking, reinstall the spacer, and install it in the vehicle.
The first we're going to demonstrate is the Koni classic for the Alfa Romeo. This is the first style, so simply bottom out the shock absorber, turn it until you feel the adjuster engage, rotate the bottom clockwise to stiffen it, counter-clockwise to soften. The amount is up to your personal preference. You can count the number of turns to gauge your setting.
The second method uses the spacer. For that method you extend the shock absorber all the way, remove the spacer, collapse the shock absorber, turn until you feel the adjuster engage, then turn it to get the appropriate setting as before. Now, re-extend the shock, install the spacer, collapse it again and it's ready to install in the vehicle.
