I always heard that "grow the beard" is basically the antonym of "jump the shark", so it's moment in time rather than direct correlation of quality to beard length.

Eyes moving first and then moving the head is what Arnold did in Terminator, since he thought a robot would super efficient, and moving that way would be most efficient. Most of the time you couldn't see Robocops eyes... And the one hologram in the play you're debating is for some reason played by Patrick Stewart but it's not ever referenced or acknowledged in dialogue.

Regarding playing episodes out of order, ABC's botching of Clerks: The Animated Series is pretty funny. Six episodes were created. ABC aired episode 4 first. Then they aired episode 2 second as was intended. But the whole gimmick of episode 2 was that it was a flashback episode to episode 1. Since nobody had ever seen episode 1, most of the jokes didn't really make any sense. Then ABC cancelled the series completely and the only way to watch all six produced episodes was when it was released on DVD (or when Adult Swim got the rights later).

Is it really black face if the actor regardless of their ethnicity is playing an alien? NO. It’s absurd to get offended by that. Let’s say a white actor is playing a Klingon and Klingons are brown skinned so the actor has brown face paint. It’s not black face if they’re playing alien. If a white actor put on brown make-up because they wanted to portray a black human THEN that’d be black face.

I'd argue it's a gray area, though. What if it's an alien that looks like black minstrel characters, shoe polish and red lips and all, but the writers claim it's an alien? That's clearly racist, even though technically it's an alien, not a black man. What if it's a white guy going into brown make-up, and primarily because the first portrayal of the new Klingon design in TNG is portrayed by a black man? That's pretty iffy, imo. Racism, like a lot of things, can be depicted on a spectrum.

“What if there’s an alien species that are designed to look like black minstrel characters”? That’s a ludicrous “what if” logical fallacy. There is absolutely nothing credible to that argument.This is an actor portraying a member of a fictional race of aliens. Just because an alien race is tanned or darker and the actor portraying the alien is not that same color that in no way means that it is somehow racist. That’s absurd. If Romulans were purple-skinned aliens would you accuse them of racism? Hopefully not. The entire argument is based on the fact that there are people in our world with a similar color to the fictional race so therefore it’s racist. Also, Klingons were known to have brown skin loooong before Michael Dorn portrayed a Klingon on TNG. The idea that white people only put on brown make up because the first portrayal of a Klingon on TNG was played by a black man is idiotic (I’m sorry).. Trekkies of all colors have been wearing brown face paint for decades because Klingons have dark skin. It’s really that simple. It’d be the same if Klingons were stark white-skinned aliens or any other color.

@@NewbieStarTrek Well theres the infamous Community episode where Senior Chang cosplays as a Drow from D&D.... Whats your take on that?

This got to the point of pure madness. It's funny that they claim at the start of each episode how this show is not for people who are easily offended but in every single episode they are grabbing every possible pseudo racist straw possible. Americans should really look sometimes beyond their borders and they would perhaps realize there are also other countries where even colouring your face black can have totally different historical connotation. Sara is so annoying with this at this point that I will have to probably stop listening to the podcast.
@NewbieStarTrek

Well, there is no historical precedent for purple skin to be a racist caricature, so that point is absurd. There is precedent for the darkening of skin to brown to be a racist caricature. That's a historical fact. It's fairly clear that it's not intended to be a racist caricature in Star Trek, so that's in all likelihood fine. But it's a gray area. Hence why we called it a gray area. The fact that Sara, a person of color, as a new viewer of the series, thought it was weird to have white actors with brown make-up on probably means she has not been the only one who thought that was weird, and to me it exposes the insular nature in which Star Trek fans have given certain things a pass without re-examination. Sometimes a fictional race's portrayal is simply a matter of coding, a way to connect to concepts in the real world through symbols and familiar customs. But sometimes that coding crosses over into stereotype. To regularly examine and analyze that is healthy. To turn away from that because it's uncomfortable is not healthy. That's what creates the insular environment for fans that makes it hard to self-examine. It's funny, because Star Trek itself has always been willing to self-examine as they've moved forward as a franchise. We're talking about Klingons, well, the original Klingons were clear Asian stereotypes, with their Fu Manchu moustaches and bushido-like codes of honor. But when they went forward with Klingons on TNG, they changed their design, hired a black actor to play the principal Klingon, complexified their worldbuilding to the point that it not only no longer was really much of an Asian stereotype but also become much more interesting. Like we have always said on the podcast, Star Trek has always been progressive...for its time. That doesn't mean we can't look back on it with different eyes now and see how we feel. And there's been all SORTS of problematic shit in Star Trek. To pretend that Star Trek is always fine all the time is either just willful ignorance or blind fanboying. And yeah, sometimes Star Trek fans are incredibly stupid. I've seen pictures of fans putting on blackface to dress up as Geordi or Worf. These are well-meaning good people who are simply excited about a character, but yeah, that's stupid. The fans aren't always right, even if their hearts aren't being malicious. Just because a group of people have been doing something for a long time doesn't make it the right thing to do.
