Jena Malone in a lead role 😍. Jena's earliest work is full of heartbreaking angst; more recently she's doing quirkier films that think outside the box in a more positive way, which I think reflects her own outlooks on life - one senses she picks roles that speak to her, and that the message they convey is almost coming from her, so real does she play her characters. It's like when you hear a song, and you feel like the singer is speaking directly to you (coincidentally she is also a singer). The message and plot of this movie are not entirely clear from the trailer, which I like, so I think some of the negative comments here are making assumptions about what it's about.

The woman on whom this story is based was just looking for parents to love and be loved by. She didn't get that from her own parents, who were deeply dysfunctional people. The woman's name just happens to be Jenna. She was 43 when she put an ad in the Charlotte, NC newspaper seeking adoption. She was educated, owned her own home and business. She was never homeless, like the character in this movie. She wasn't looking for financial support, just familial love. She found what she was looking for in an older couple in Charlotte. She started a website to help connect adults who wanted to find the parental love and bond they never had.

With the people in my life that have been adopted as adults it was more of a formal legality, they had already considered the "adopter" as their parent for years, even decades, but weren't legally allowed to call them that until they were over 18 and could make their own decisions. My cousin's stepson is in this position right now. His mother passed away a few years ago and his biological father never signed the forms to allow his step-dad (my cousin) to adopt him. Once he turns 18 they can legally do it. There are many many legal reasons why an adult would want someone to adopt them, power of attorney, medical decisions, inheritance (though this last one isn't the best reason anymore). But you're right, for am emotional relationship it's not necessary, but as a reason why gay marriage exists, adult adoption exists too, and it's all legality stuff
