🎶 It's been exactly 1 year since I begun my journey to learn the Harp. I wanted to prove to myself that it's never too late to learn. Since staying at home was inevitable this period, I thought it would be the perfect opportunity to start. This video is my progress throughout the year from May 2020 - May 2021.
🎶 BACKGROUND:
I am already a pianist and singer and have the advantage of knowing how to read music and playing by ear, but that being said, I found that my piano technique made it extremely difficult to maintain the harp hand shape as instinctively my hands tried to straighten out as if on piano keys, and despite being able to comfortably play by ear on the piano, i was not used to the spacing of the harp strings and playing without the strings buzzing, so if i tried to improvise or sight read at the start, my technique, form and fingering disappeared completely. So i focused a lot on doing technical exercises to build good technique at the start, before exploring repertoire.
🎶 PRACTISE:
I practised around 4-5 days a week from Day 1 - Month 6, but my practise started to regress from Month 7 onwards (the world opened back up and regular life routine resumed!), so I wasn't too happy with the 1 year result, but that's on me for not practising as often! However, I am proud overall for starting. Hoping to continue to keep track and make a 2 year progress video in the future.
🎶 INSTRUMENTS:
I mainly used my phone to record, as I felt that if I used my DSLR I would lose motivation as it would be too much work haha! But I felt the audio does not justify the amazing quality of the instruments. Both harps had an extremely full resonant sound, but in particular the pedal harp had the kind of sound that goes straight through your body and filled the whole room!
Lever Harp: 34 String Kempster Lever Harp
Pedal harp: Princess Sakura Pedal Harp Aoyama
Hopefully this gives you a realistic idea of learning the instrument and inspires you to try and learn the instrument of your dreams. It's never too late :)
