I used that method for years but I now do it on the road. I advance timing a bit and drive. If I don't get a ping when pulling at low RPM and full throttle; I advance until I do then back off just enough to prevent it. I feel this is optimum. The ECU is supposed to correct for temperature and pressure (altitude) but I sometimes have to back off a bit more in the fall.

I would totally do this if I wasn't installing the supercharger this winter. I'll have the powercards control the timing for me then, but I'd deffo do this otherwise as I always run on 98 octane anyway (EU rating).
@GearHeadsGarageChannel
8 жыл бұрын
Totally Legit Gaming [TLEG] I know your at 98 but I believe that RON and AKI are actually different measurements, so your 98 would be the same ad 91-93 here or something similar.
@TheOnlyToblin
8 жыл бұрын
GearHeads Garage Correct. I think our 98 is roughly equivelant to your 93 and our 95 is about your 91. That's why I added the EU rating disclaimer, as we use different measuring sticks. Did you ever try driving on 91 with advanced timing? Did it work at all? I've never had knock driving on 95 (your 91) in the stock engine, so I'm curious of the timing could cause that.
@GearHeadsGarageChannel
8 жыл бұрын
Totally Legit Gaming [TLEG] I didnt have knock, just pinging, when I bought the car the timing was too advanced, someone had an aftermarket ignition controller on it and it would ping a bit going up hills and under load, especially on a hot day. But I think it was running at like 19+ degrees of timing. It pinged more on 87 for sure.

It's funny that you have to tell the newer generation that this is a performance mod. Setting timing used to be regular maintenance like replacing a fuel filter.

@ThisMarv
7 жыл бұрын
So if it would light up at an other time than plug 1 firing, the mark would be at a different position?
@GearHeadsGarageChannel
7 жыл бұрын
Yes, or if plug 1 was firing at the wrong time. the thing you gotta think about is when its dark and that light flashes over and over like that, you can see in the video it makes it almost look like a solid line, and it moves back and forth if you move the timing around by turning the CAS. If your spark timing was so far off that the crank pulley was on the other side of the rotation, the car wouldn't even be running lol I didn't rewatch this whole thing right now but I believe I mentioned and showed how to find the notch on the crank pulley that is top dead center for Cylinder 1, this does not get adjusted, the crankshaft and camshafts are locked together by the timing belt, all we are doing in this is changing the exact moment that the spark plug is being fired.

Hey I have a 94 1.8L engine that I am setting for 10 degree advanced for megasqurit turbo setup. On my crankshaft pulley I have two marks. From what I have read the first mark to the left is the BTDC and mark to right is TDC. Seeing mixed things on forums as to which notch to set to 10. It sounds much smoother when the BTDC or left notch is set to 10. Any help appreciated. Thanks

Maybe your harmonic balancer slipped. Take the #1 spark plug out, put something long down the hole to watch the piston move and put the piston at TDC and see if the mark on the crank actually lines up with that or not. If not then you have your answer and I would recommend getting a new balancer as well.

No, it wont. This is and always has been one of the most common mods on Miatas. If your engine is not pinging/detonating it is causing absolutely no harm and 12-14°btdc of total ignition advance has long been proven as a nice way to move your torque band a bit lower and earlier without causing any harm. Obviously doing things like this is at your own risk and if you make a mistake or mess up and are running at 18-20° you will likely have serious detonation issues. No reason to fear monger here, this is being paranoid.

Well for the record 60k Kilometers is almost nothing in this country, the engine in my Miata making that noise still ran perfect and was very healthy with 165,000 miles on it, almost 250,000 KM where you are from. In the Miata this is a normal and harmless noise, but thats not always true for other cars there is many variables and different sounds to expect.

Sad Guroo You mean you pulled it off the car and its locked up? or you just cant turn it in the car? if it was locked up the cam would probably snap the rod in the CAS and break it, so I imagine yours is probably just tight or maybe someone siliconed it onto the head or something. Take the bolts out and play with it its not a complicated Mechanism to turn it you probably just need to break it loose.

how much power is gained from this?
@GearHeadsGarageChannel

It's only 3-4 peak horsepower, but it moves your torque curve down and gives you more torque much sooner than stock, its a pretty noticeable difference when your driving. Considering an intake and exhaust on these cars might only net 3-5 hp each anyways, this is a good thing you can do that doesn't cost you anything and makes the car more fun to drive.
@fivedotsdave9723
5 жыл бұрын
You don't get any power increase, it will lose top end power and torque because the timing has been moved to increase torque at low rpm you will lose out as the revs increase and the pistons will be a bit pissed and could suffer depending on how hard its rev'd .....
