Just picked up a 10000 btu Radiant Kerosene heater. Last winter, here in the Catskills, we had power outage after power outage and nearly froze to death. Almost impossible to get anyone to put in a wood stove or an electrician up here with the building boom that's going on, so, I'm hoping this will do the trick. Kerosene is almost 60 bucks for a 5 gallon container at the cheapest big box store - Tractor Supply. I haven't checked out the local NY gas stations yet. Thanks for this video.

The only thing that you left out was, everyone needs a mister funnel or an equivalent funnel that filters water from the kerosene. Your heater will burn much cleaner, with no smoke or smell while heating, and each tank full will be consistent. I have been heating with kerosene since 2009 and getting the moister out is the key to heating with kerosene.

It used to be that you could get K1 kerosene at your local gas station, I have so far been to 10 different stations and still have not found it, I did buy some at Walmart in a gallon container, but the price is just to high 8.50 a gallon, The local farm store has 5 gallon containers for 40.00 dollars. Gene, great video. Just ignore David Del. He obviously doesn't understand the efficiency and heat generated (or lack of heat generated) by electric heaters. Also, try and find electricity priced at .05 cents per KWH anywhere in North America...ain't gonna happen. Right now where I live peak hour electricity is priced at 13.5 cents per KWH. Mid peak is 11.2 cents per KWH and off peak is 7.5 cents per KWH. The amount .05 cents is less than half a cent per KWH. Did David mean 5 cents per KWH? Still the heat generated by electric heaters doesn't even compare to the heat emitted from one low powered kerosene heater. Also, if the power goes out, you aren't getting any heat from that electric heater. Again, just ignore David and let him freeze in the dark. Maybe then he might want to buy a kerosene heater.

TotoFrancey, Here is my source from the University of Michigan for my comment www.msue.msu.edu/objects/content_revision/download.cfm/revision_id.499650/workspace_id.-4/01500603.html/ "#12 Is it cheaper to use a portable kerosene heater or a portable electric heater for spot heating my home? It costs about the same to operate either heater when your electrical rate is 5 cents per kilowatt hour and you can buy 1-K grade kerosene for $2 per gallon." Currently Kerosene is $4.999 Again I pay $0.05083/KWH GENER (from my current electric bill) This same study list several other factors when using Kerosene you must consider (see the article for other important including safety considerations. Like I said "if its (electric) available" which is about 99% of the time. I have no problem with people using Kerosene, my comment was only to show how expensive Kerosene has gotten over the last few years. I started using Kerosene when it was $0.72 a gallon and it was great. Now that it's $4.999 I think its not as price effective as it was before. As I said, "WHEN ITS (ELECTRIC) IS AVAILABLE. I live in a rural area, so therefore I use several heating sources as a precaution. I use propane, wood burning stove and Kerosene. Finally, during last year's harsh winter, Kerosene supplies ran out for a week in January and other times it was up to $7.00 per gallon for a week or 2. So what's with the attitude Mr. TotoFrancy??? If someone makes mistake, just kindly point there misunderstanding out and help them learn. Otherwise, if you disagree with the figures, write the U of Michigan about their study.

What's the "advantage" of kerosene? Those heaters burn a gallon every 8 hours. You can't even make it through a weekend on 5-gallons of K-1 which, by the way, is $8-10 per gallon. Only costs me $35 to refill my 40 lb propane tank every 2 weeks...and I run a Mr. Heater Big Buddy 8-12 hours per day on medium. Even at the pump, Kerosene is $4.99 per gallon and you know it ain't pure K-1. They dillute it with diesel/heating oil. Plus transferring kerosene into those little heater tanks with an opening the size of a soda bottle is a surgical procedure. You spil any on your clothes or inside somewhere & everything stinks for a week. Better off with propane because it's cheaper, more abundant to find, less of a hazard to handle, easier to transfer and environmentally safer. No harmful by-products when burned. Propane is NOT a greenhouse gas.

It depends on where you live. For me, kerosene is quite a bit cheaper per BTU, though there are gas wells everywhere around my house. I also have many memories of huddling by a sizeable propane heater on a cold day, with a "similarly sized" (visually) kerosene heater nearly turning the room into an oven. That said, gas is much easier to control. Many of the much older heaters I remember can be burned at many different settings.

According to the University of Michigan, if you pay for electric power .05 cents per KWH the equal price of Kerosene is $2.00 per gallon. I just paid today $5.00 for a gallon of kerosene. Diesel fuel will work fine on the old style flame spreader heaters only if you use a 100% cotton wick. The wicks with fiberglass sewn in the top will clog up rapidly with diesel fuel. @johnwyman6331

@@gregorymalchuk272 I believe it can, as long as it's an older style flame spreader type heater. Apparently the newer catalytic style heaters run too hot for a cotton wick. it's very similar to diesel fuel, so same rules apply (100% cotton wick). I believe it's the same as #1 diesel, which is used in the winter for large trucks. It's a little bit thinner than #2 diesel. Between kerosene and #2 diesel. Although heating oil is dyed red I believe. Some oil lamps and kerosene heaters have problems with that dye (plugs wicks after a while so need to be cleaned a little more often). Same with dyed kerosene. If it runs okay on dyed kerosene it should be fine. For lots,and lots more information, and for the best wicks for all kinds of crazy oil lamps, and heaters, check out www.milesstair.com Wick shoppe. I've never seen, nor heard of any better place in the world. By the way when I was growing up in the Northeast U.S., we had an oil-fired boiler that every few years we would run out of oil in winter and couldn't get any right away. My dad brought me and some old gas cans to the gas station, filled them with diesel, poured them into the tank and bled the oil line to the boiler. Worked just like regular old heating oil. Kerosene should work too. Hope this helps.

With diesel fuel, i learned it here by watching the videos of some people putting diesel fuel into a kerosene heater. The new diesel is ultra low sulfur (ULSD) You have to use diesel injector cleaner or Isoporopyl Alcohol, Add about 6 to 8oz of 91% isopropyl alcohol to a gallon of diesel. The alcohol removes the water and the oils and helps it burn hotter to. If you do not add the additive to the diesel it will clog the wick. So far it has worked for me. But i cannot say how long the wick will last using diesel fuel. The old diesel did smoke alot, 1990s. The newer diesel does not smoke and burns cleaner. Let me know the results.
@michaelgibbons6294

You have to have the old flame spreader type heater, like the old PERFECTION heater, they are made from the 1800's to 1980 and use the old 100% cotton wick, and the wick can tolerate the diesel without adding nothing to the fuel. TRY DOING THIS WITH THE TWO HEATERS IN THIS VIDEO. they use the FIBERGLASS WICK two tank fulls the wick will be junk. COTTON wicks can tolerate the oil that is found in diesel fuel OR in home heating oil (RED DYE DIESEL FUEL) Fiberglass wicks cannot tolerate the oil found in diesel fuel.

Kerosene has more BTUS in a gallon so it would last longer than vegetable oil

I thought, Kerosene, sends up a lot of black soot, black smoke??? What brand of Kerosene, should I buy, that doesn't create smoke???

Read the directions that came with your Kerosene heater, it likely mentions something along the lines of 1/2in flame above a certain point Blue would be overly rich, and would smell pretty strong. (In most wick heaters, in the US)

@@DarkLinkAD Actually, a blue flame is burning lean, clean and economically. A yellow flame is burning inefficiently and creates soot. My workshop heater runs with virtually no smell except when I extinguish the flame. Back in the '50s and '60s, paraffin heaters were very popular in the UK for rooms that had no other method of heating.
