After a day of EXPLORING the CITY of ANTIGUA it was time to see a little bit outside of the centre and go on a little BACKPACKING ADVENTURE.
CERRO DE LA CRUZ is a very popular HILL in Antigua that gives an amazing view of AGUA VOLCANO. The foot of the hill can be found just north of the city centre. I found it by aiming myself in the general direction and just saying "Cerro De La Cruz" to random people who guided me to the entrance. The walk itself is not overly challenging. It took me about 45 minutes and I'm unfit. Some people do it quicker, some slower. My advice is to take water and snacks with you cos they will cost much more from the sellers at the top.
You will be rewarded for your efforts with an EPIC view of Agua Volcano and the city of Antigua below, just epic sights. I went on a week day and it wasn't too busy, at weekends I've heard it very crowded. After taking in the sights of the city and volcano, and the huge IRON CROSS of course, you should continue a little further up and there is an IRON MONUMENT of a MAN on a HORSE. No idea what it symbolises.........if you find out do let me know.
Just past the monument is a road heading up a hill, this route heads towards 2 adventure parks: ALTAMIRA (which is closer to Cerro De La Cruz) and HOBBITENANGO. Both these ADVENTURE PARKS offer amazing views and activities for all the family. I decided to visit Altamira because it was closer and I didn't see the point doing them both. Please be warned it is possible to walk to these adventure parks but the walk is uphill and very far. It takes about 30 minutes by TUK TUK so you do the maths.
Speaking of TUK TUK's I negotiated with a driver at Cerro De La Cruz to take me there and back, we agreed on 100 q's because he said that he would wait for me. I thought this was a fair price but I found out when I got to me GUESTHOUSE that I had paid too much, it should have been about 60 - 70 q's. Plus my driver decided to demand extra money becuase he had waited for me, but that was the deal in the first place. But these things happen when you are dealing with Tuk Tuk drivers.
Anyways Altamira was only 25 q's to get in and it is well worth the money. There are lots of picture opportunities and things to do, a fantastic afternoon out. I ended up spending just 2 hours, but I rushed through everything so I could get back for my driver who was waiting, you could probably spend the whole day there and not see everything.
