Loved seeing the sailboat go where the fast motorboats couldn't go. The captain also knew when to shake out his second sail. Who knows, he might have been starting a circumnavigation of the globe.

Yes but if the keel is to deep you might get stuck in that inlet then waves will destroy your boat nobody sails big sailboats with large keels through this inlet I tried on a calm day and almost got stuck myself had to go back to peanut island, that was my first solo sailing trip btw.

I'm a new sailor but I don't think its capsizing that I would be worried about. I have an inlet very much like this and my biggest fear is waves/current taking me into the shallows or rocks on the side. Sailboats just don't have that much power, but so far I've stuck to the bay for sailing.

If it's a centerboard keep it down. Keep the hatches down. And motor away. The sail is for stability not power. Nice to have 80 percent of your weight 4 feet blow the water line.

Way too negative, a sailboat can take bigger waves. The boat is enclosed.

Nice post, but those waves, for that boat were very manageable and Hartley posed a risk for a sail boat. Power boats, with a much higher center of gravity are very different.

Sailboats are made to withstand much worse . Water over the bow isn't as much of an issue with a sailboat as it is with a fishing boat.

Thanks for watching and commenting, Paul. It really means a lot as you know. I was amazed that the boat did not capsize. I thought for sure I was going to film a rescue in action.

Not scary if you've trained for this...this boat can handle this.

Clearly a sailboat like that has a lot of ballast odds of a capsize if they keep nose into waves and to 1/4 he d be better then a 45 ft powerboat

I knew it would make it, the sea is much rougher when sailing 500 miles offshore at times where its like that for hours on end

Perfectly said Scott, and that looks like to be a Bristol 30, those boats are massive, they have 4000 pounds of Lead Ballast in their full keels, there is no way to capsize one of those, it is already a huge mark if you can even do a knockdown on it. He had it all in his favor, outgoing tide, a good close haul/close reach, and a boat made for much worse.

@@THEGG_99 I sail a Columbia 50, 14,500 lbs of lead, this is just getting interesting. Now try sailing in 50 knot winds, and 40 foot seas, then we'll talk. Bristol 30's are wonderul boats, much like Alberg's, Hinckley's, and just about anything Bob Perry design..LOL.
